Thoughts on the V GTI as a country tourer...

Today finally piled the family into my 2door and set off for a one hour drive to braidwood nsw

First chance I have had for a country drive!

Surprisingly high amount of NVH especially
Vibration throughout the seats,
Tyre noise
Wind noise

Performance was good, economy was great.

Dsg was in the right gear 90 pc of the time

Leather seats comfy!

Overall just the noise and vibration was annoying. Perhaps best as a city car or for taking on a class motorways?

Keen on other peep's thoughts on the GTI as a touring car on Aussie roads...

Satz, driving from Canberra to Sydney, I found reducing the air pressure in the tyres made a massive difference. I had it at 44psi and let it down to 34psi. It was a world of difference in noise reduction! Driving at the speed limit (despite most people doing ~120) also made a difference on the drive back to Sydney. I was expecting to see a Redflex camera and only saw a real HP bloke, in the bushes, who picked someone up within 4mins of me passing his hideout.

Having recently travelled to Canberra and back for the German Auto Fest, I can think of few cars that I'd rather use that the GTI. It's no Lexus as far as NVH is concerned, but then I don't expect it to be, it's not that sort of car.

Some road noise, but much improved with Bridgestone Adrenalins over the factory Conti's. Tyre pressures 38 and 36 which I find to be a good compromise. Wind noise - low. No harshness to speak of. Bonus points for being able to do the run each way on a full tank.

I think the car would be great on the Hume Hwy as it's pretty smooth all the way from Canberra to Sydney.

It's more the B-grade, or lesser A-grade roads, that make the car feel a bit choppy.

I'll reduce my tyre pressures, which are currently around 255kPa, to around the recommended 240 and see how that feels around town...

The ventilation at the front was good, unlike other new cars in which you pretty much have to run AC to get vent air the same as outside air temp, even on cool days! HOWEVER...the airflow from the rear vents was quite poor, even at fan speed 4 with face setting only. How do you guys find it?


Sounds like I need to make another trip in the car, before deciding whether it's going to be a long-term keeper...

On my R32, I've recently changed from Dunlop Sport Maxx, to a replacement tyre (also from Dunlop). Tyre noise is dramatically reduced.

my car's got some fairly shocking wind noise, especially 'gusts'. Checked all the sunroof, windscreen and door seals and they seem okay. Just produces this noticeable wind noise from roughly over the top edge of the windscreen
