  • RE: Forge TWINtercooler - GT 1.4 TSI

    Had the Forge Twintercooler, purchased from Rennenhaus, on a for a few weeks, and though since there's not many reviews running around for the system for the GT TSI, (which really annoyed me!) thought I might write a review for people looking at the piece of hardware.

    P.S (No installation photos)

    What's in the box
    * 2x Forge Silicone hoses
    * Intercooler
    * Associated clamps bolts/screws etc

    Probably a good 4 hours to install had a fellow forum members help to install it.
    The front bumper needs to be removed, the hoses are difficult to put on as the system is hooked up to the standard intercooler and also to the Forge one.

    The Forge instruction are pretty good that are supplied although the only problem we ran into is they recommend to move the drivers side horn to another position where the Xenon washer jets impede the bumper being put back on. So we just ended up using the supplied piece in the stock position and it fit.

    There is not much room, in the front and it is a tight fit, so much so that a couple of torx screws didn't manage to match up.

    Can't speak on how much it's improved quantitatively however have definitely noticed that fuel consumption is down considerably (an extra 50-100km for a tank).

    There is a bit of cutting to the stock fog grills and the bumper, but it's not very noticeable that there is an intercooler hooked up to the car which I am happy with.

    Very interesting bit of kit mate, but the one question I have is how's the response? It seems there's two schools of thought about bigger inlet areas, the first that it takes longer to fill, thus response is down, but the other reckons it's full of air anyhow, and extra volume doesn't really matter in forced induction. I reckon it makes a lot of sense to drop the inlet temps and increase the heatsink ability of the intercooler especially in summer, but I'd be interested in your thoughts as to how it feels from the bumometer.

    Congrats on the continued awesomness of your GT mate!

      There is some merit to the lag theory as Pressure is Force x area. The twintercooler increases the amount of area however unless the Supercharger increase the amount of work it does there is a drop in pressure.

      That said there is a very minute bit of lag, I'll stress very minute, because you wouldn't feel it unless you're actually looking for it. We were actually going to log the Original boost v boost after the intercooler was installed, but we forgot.....

      I'll also be moving over to the Superchips/Bluefin (something similar to what Ian was running on the Golf TSI) tune instead of my current tune as to allow some customisation with the extra hardware, some time in the future.

          I'll be replacing the fog grill with R-Line fog grills hopefully next week

            Wow so Forge did their homework, if you can't really notice any extra lag, then the increase in volume has been offset by extra cooling! Nice!!
            The twincharge definately needs extra cooling, with two compressors adding heat to the inlet!

                Hi Tom,

                Is Superchips/Bluefin coming out with a tune for our GTs? The last I checked, they didn't have one out yet and had no plans for one.

                      If that's the case it should fit on a GT TDI as well.

                      Here's hoping as when it's over 35 degrees heatsoak is appalling.

                        The TSI has a different hose out of the stock IC, straight back towards the driver whereas the TDI bends 120 degrees and heads towards the passenger side, so that would need a bit of modding, but the input would be the same on the TDI. Same intercooler, same mounts, same space available.

                        Would be a great TDI mod for hot climates.
