  • 105,000k service, Yikes!

I've got the jetta in for a 105,00k service today.

The service consultant rang about an hour after dropping it off.

Now I knew the rear pads were very low (and suspected rotors too) but the bad [good] news is:-

    front pads and rotors
cam belt and preventative water pump
    EGR valve clean (maybe replace)
    rear pads and rotors
AND wiper blades for good measure

All the usual suspects at this age/distance.

After reading about many other watercoolers experience the reality has finally caught up with me. I'll let you know how much they charge my leasing company for the privilege of VW motoring.

    Cheers,

Why? Do they have some magical pixie dust that avoids the need to replace these items

...that is why I DO go to an independant !

        $$ for the service Mav...geez..

You did well to get your rears to last as long as the fronts though, my rears are almost gone at 70k, and the fronts are about half. My amazing independant gave me a range of upgrade options for the rears when they go, cheaper than OEM of course!

A oil catch can could have saved you the EGR valve!!

Do the wipers yourself, they'll charge you around $120 for a job that can be done in less then 2 min. Last time i checked, a set of genuine wipers cost $60.

if you're leasing, why does it matter? It's all absorbed in your lease payments isn't it?

If you're not convinced about the front pads, check them yourself as I've found some mechanics to very liberal in their replacement. Other bits are all pretty standard for that mileage.

My baby is in for its 115K service - it's a major. Likewise cam belt and water pump etc. I phoned Volkspower in Burwood first, and they quoted $800. When I got there they gave me the news that it's time for the cam belt etc as well - another $1000 thanks. Ouch. At least its not a DSG as I understand it could be worse...

Brake pads have the wear indicators, so unless they came "on" you should have enough friction material remaining.

They indicated a leak so I'm going by what they've advised.

$34 from Burwin. I'll do the comparison and let them know

Yes it's in the leasing payments. And all previous services via this dealership have all been good and sufficiently cheaper compared to being Joe Public. Oh and the dealer is the preferred supplier of VW to the leasing Company here in VIC. AND I'm hoping to have a bit of a balance at the end of the lease to get back after my nominal income tax rate is applied.

They mentioned that the rotors were a bit thin. Only 0.2 mm left on the rears and 0.3 mm on the fronts. So rather than going back in within the next 15,000k to get it done, it's getting done now.

Sensor is on only one front pad. So while there was some friction material left the rotors are too thin. see above comment re thickness (or thinness as it turns out)

Thank you for all your feed back. I'll post when I have details of service for future comparisons.

                    OK, got the car back!

Now I knew that it was going to be somewhat expensive.

Here's the breakdown (excluding GST as that's how the invoice is detailed)

                    105,000k service $286.55

Rear pads and rotors parts and labour $298.73

                    front pads and rotors 396.98

Timing Belt inc water pump and coolant 815.17

                    EGR replacement 214.48

                    wipers 40.82

                    pollen filter 19.00

                    All up inc gst $2,388.90

Still when you consider this and all other services, fuel , insurance and rego it's less per kilometre travelled than my v6 Camry

Jetta is running at $0.196 per km and Camry ii $0.243

Although that's a big lump all at once, the individual bits are not that bad.

Significant that it's less than the reputed cheap motoring of Camry.

true, if you stick to the 12-month/15000km service interval, despite the 'shock' lump sum but it may end up actually cheaper compared to other cars that needs to be serviced 6-month/5000km interval! especially if you're going for dealership service every time....

my wife's car is a classic example, she won't let others touch hers other than the toyota dealer she bought it from. average toyota service? $400-600 every 6 months.

NO amount of money is worth driving around in a Camry. EVER.
