Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I asked my dealer for a price while I was picking up some spares. Around $800 & 4 hrs work. Add another $300 & 1 hour if the waterpump is also changed.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

The $300 includes the 1 hours labour and coolant so the price isn't too bad.

This is all just confirming for me how much more it is going to cost to service our new Golf than the Forester XT that we will be still running.

You obviously have not had to change the timming belt on the Frosty yet, had it done on a Liberty few years back. Cost a lot, (about $1250) neded new cam seals, water pump, radiator had be taken out, etc. and that was an independent, not a dealer.

The belt alone is a fortune becuase it is about 5km long.

Unless it was Liberty turbo, belt would be cheaper to replace than on Golf. And unless the engine done 200000 km, you shouldn't need to replace the water pump, also radiator doesn't need to be removed. The oil pump seals leak on Subaru engines and they cost less than $25, t.belt is around $145 from dealer.

I've done many Subaru timing belts including on ours. It should cost around $400 with oil pump seal, and belt needs to be done every 100,000km on non turbo, turbo is every 50,000km.

                Was a non turbo 2.5L 2GEN at 100 00km.

2GENs have an old school radiator unlike the GEN3s wich have a slim one. Hence why it had to be removed.

Now you have me thinking, waterpump might not of been replaced but talked about (was over 5 years ago, do not remember exact details now). Meh, dosen't matter.

BTW Was not oil pump seals, it was the seals at the end of the cams at the front of the engine (In a great bit of design the oil would leak straight onto the exhuast ).

Yep, gen2 or gen3, it can be done without removing the radiator.

Yes, it was done at the 125,000km service which cost $756 in total. The belt cost $197 + GST

The dealer (Wippells, Toowoomba) who did it is also a VW dealer with a great reputation. All Forester & Liberty cam belts since 2006 now get changed at 125,000km. In the US the same belt replacement is done at 106,000 miles so they must think it will last long enough. I know the accepted practice is to change idlers / pulleys / water pumps at the same time but they didn't on mine so I have lived with that little worry. I'm now at 196,000km and I'm going to demand that it's done at 250,000km.

Each to their own. By the way its only 3 bolts extra to change the pump so 1 hrs labour is a joke especially when you are in there anyway, if you were at the coal face you would know what im talking about.
