Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf R test drive

Yesterday, one of the wiper blades on my R32 started to play up, so I ducked over to Burwin to get a couple of replacements. $33 installed. Always very nice people to deal with.

Whilst there we had a chat to one of the sales guys, and had a good look at a Golf R. The one in the showroom was a manual, in silver with black leather interior. Turned out that they had another, which was a demo, so we took that for a drive. It was interesting. The demo car was black with black interior, and fitted with DSG.

The cabin was nice and tidy, but I just can't stand black. It would be a deal breaker unless I could get another colour. The details on the dash all seem to have picked up chrome finishes, which seemed a bit over the top to me. I liked the white (instead of red) displays. Cabin was very comfortable, and the seats are excellent.

Sound. Well, the sound defines the R32. It sounds good no matter what it's doing. The R sounded good at high revs, but for much of the time there was a very uninspiring sound track. The boss thought it sounded like a diesel at low revs.

Driving. Lovely ride (even on 19" wheels) with the standard suspension. Basically it felt good, though really little different to the R32.

Engine. This I really didn't like. Very noticeable lag. Very quick indeed once it got on song, but the response was anything but instant. Driving around town, with the gearbox in D, it was flat as a tack unless you prodded the accelerator enough to make it downshift, or did it yourself. The R32 has no issues in traffic in top gear, but the R really needed to be downshifted.

Overall, I suspect it would work better as a manual, either by always driving the DSG in that mode, or by having a clutch. Nice machine, but more biased towards the GTI than the previous model.

If I owned a GTI I would see this as a great upgrade, but I don't think it's for me after the R32.

It'll be a fun thread if a replica of that thread starts up

I've never driven an R32 and I can't legally drive an R right now, but I'd probably choose an R36 over the R..

Ah yes, I remember that thread now. Well, the upshot is that the standard car is not my cup of tea. I don't care how many kw can be cranked out after mods...I'm very unlikely to do that, and anyway, I can't see that improving the lag situation. Unlike you, I had no issue with the ride. As I said, it was a nice car, and would make a great upgrade from the GTI, but it's a step sideways from the R32, and as such, has left me behind.

I think arguing about whats better here is almost pointless. If we all liked the same thing ther'd only be one type of Golf!!

I personally love my Mk5 GTI with the APR stage 1 as it has the same power and more torque than an R or an R32 and has the added challenge of being 2wd. Yeah sure, its harder to drive, doesn't have the bling factor and doesn't sound as good as an R32, but, its faster than an R32 if you can drive it...and it may even be faster than an R, don't know. Having said that, I see why many others like the other models, they all have their appeal.

I reckon the R with the K03 turbo and an APR tune would be a cracker...no lag and all the knackers

I'm still yet to drive a GTI. Might make that my next test drive. According to whitejames its a better package than the R anyway.

Well the GTI is, at least according to Motor's BFYB 2010... can't argue that the R will always be faster, more powerful and more sport oriented, but for 30kw extra, albeit the AWD, having to fork $15-20k driveaway price difference does become a huge decision factor...
U've got to be a really enthusiast to go for it, but for most punters they'd be happy with the GTI which is just as equally fun...

Hi there.I have a R32 and wifey has Pirelli GTi.Want the new R real bad after driving it with all the trimmings.Point is the R32 is soooo good I NEVER want to get rid of it.The solution was obvious to me but not so to lovely spouse.Sell the GTi, buy the R for me and she inherits the R32.Everybody wins and I keep my beloved R32 in the stable.R is arriving 12th december 2010.Anyone wants a Black GTi Pireeli with 10,000km let me know. Cheers Andrew

I had a MkV GTI for four years before swapping to R36 wagon. I needed a second car so she suggested another golf.

Looked at the new GTI, R and R32. And whats in my garage....R36 & R32, we are an R family now.

And my choice if I was to only have one car.......sorry but its the R36 by some margin.
