  • What is the true value of a used car with new car warranty remaining?

    Hi guys

This is a great forum, I've trawled thru posts after posts and already learnt lots about these great cars!

Anyways I'm after some of your thoughts and opinions. I'm looking to buy a MkV GTI and am a little confused by the 2006 model for $29k vs going for a 2008 model that has remaining factory warranty and the option to extend for $36k.

I use PT to get to work so my car is purely a weekender and weeknight toy. Both cars have excellent service histories and both have similar k's on them based on their age ie 06 has 60000km on it and the 08 has 35000 on the clock.
I can afford to pay off either car but can justify the cheaper car easier as it's a weekend warrior only

So what are your thoughts? Anyone here faced with a similar decision and if so, what did you choose?

Oh yeh my color pref is the 2008 in candy white and the 2006 is a 3dr which is my car shape preference! I also realize there are differences bw the models which I'm still wrapping my head around.

Oh yeh they are manual cars too!

    2008 VW golf GTI

    Hey,

I just bought a 4dr 2008 GTI with 69,000 on the clock for 29k a few weeks ago. Still had 12 months of new car warranty with the option to extend. Had leather, sunroof and manual. Most of the ks were country ks but the car has a fair few paint chips on the bonnet and front corner.

To me getting the higher ks with a newer car was worth the comprimise and I have the peice of mind of new car warranty. I just got a bit lucky I think as the owner was motivated to sell because of finance reasons (was a private sale).

After I bought it and finding all the nice gadgets I'm kinda glad I've got one with warranty incase something goes wrong. I'll probably extend the warranty before it runs out also.

So far so good but it's only been a few weeks

    Good luck with your purchasing!

    Thanks,

    Scott

Thanks for your reply Scott. You scored there price wise. I have a trade in so am only looking at Dealer cars. So I'll be taking a bit of a hit I suppose.

The only thing I'm really keen to add isnthe RNS510 which I hear matches the 08 better with the full size MFD.

At the end of the day it'll be either a financial choice or a peace of mind one !

Look around ,go on carsales in the private listings thats where i bought mine , a 2009 GT Diesel with 38,000km on the clock ive seen the same vehicle in VW yards still going for $33,000, Yet i paid only $26,000 after some haggling.
Even my insurer agreed to insure it for over $35,000, so look around there are deals out there it you look.

you could always wholesale the car so you can buy from a yard or private. That's all the dealer will do unless they can sell it in their yard. All used car lots will have contact details for wholesalers.

Thanks Sean. Both cars I've mentioned are being sold by dealers that own Subaru dealerships so the trade in offers have been quite decent on my car. Sure I'd come out ahead if I sold privately. I just don't have the time or inclination to be bothered with it.

FWIW - MkV 3DR GTIs were all made in Wolfburg (Germany) and 5DR GTIs in South Africa. Except for the Pirelli Limited edition models where both 3Dr and 5Dr models were manufactured in Germany.

That is interesting. Didn't know that. So I suppose the question is is there a difference in build quality? And the lack of 3drs on the road, is that due to popularity of the 5dr or more due to VW not sending many 3doors DU? Hmmmmm something for me to research!

I own both a 3DR Pirelli and a 5DR MKV GT (made in SA). Can't say that one is made better than the other. But having two extra doors makes the GT a better daily driver esp if you have kids/pets or regular passengers. The doors on the 3DR are quite heavy and access to the rear is a bit of a PITA which would explain why the 5DR GTI had wider appeal (hence more were ordered).

Having said that, the 3DR looks better IMO.

Early 5 Door GTI's were made in Germany - MY06 and some MY07's.

There is no difference in build quality between the SA and Germany manufactured Golfs.

The lack of 3 doors on the road has to do with lack of popularity and they weren't available for the first year or so of production in Australia.

Thanks for all the replies. Even tho I prefer the exclusivity of the 3dr, I think the practicality of the 5 might win out. More I think about I like the idea of the newer car and the ability to extend the new car warranty.

                              Buying through dealer

Even if you do buy through a dealer you should be able to get a decent discount if you haggle a bit. There really wasn't that many around at dealers when I bought mine in Melbourne but dealers were still keen to negotiate.

I'm considering the sat nav but for 1 or 2k I might wait a while till I add one. Only read after I bought it that it was easier on the 08.

As far as I know mine is made in south Africa and build quality seems good to me. Lots of little rattles in the city roads but that's normal as far as I can tell and I'm quite sensitive to little noises.

Buying and selling Privately is a bit of a pain and cash is scarce for a while . I can see the advantages of dealers now but overall worked out.

                              Good luck with your purchasing
