Yes that's true, however you run that risk with every car (out of warranty) when buying second hand. All you can do is base your decision on service history and hope for the best i guess.

Back on topic - I'm still to here about a DSG box having a major failure thats resulted in $$$$$. There are some DSG units with over 160,000kms on the clock and about 5 years old.

There was a survey thread that discussed age/kms/issues and I think one of the watercooled members has one of the first DSGs in Australia.
