Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • GTI stock Air intake - am I missing a piece on mine?

    hi all

was having a look at the air intake on my 2008 Golf GTI. Seems to have the 'bellows' all connected correctly, but directly underneath the bellows piece, there seems to be a gap that is about 25mm high with a divider in the middle. It would seem to allow air to come in under the intake and straight into the engine bay...

Any idea what that gap is for? Or am I missing a piece?

I will try to get a photo uploaded asap

    cheers

here's a photo I just took. This is from inside the engine bay looking forwards. The gap is the dusty part with the red arrow pointing to it. It's approx 25mm high.

          please see this link: http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/6643/dsc00083b.jpg

or if that doesn't work, perhaps try this link: http://yfrog.com/n7dsc00083bj

          thanks all

          cheers

Doesn't look like anything to worry about. Mine has the top cover above that slot come off regularly.

Dont know what its for, but every mkv with the stock intake has it. never had a issue with mine, and neither has anyone else.

It's on the stock intake for the Tiguan as well.
I believe it has something to do with allowing dust and other particulates flow out through the air box and not clog up the airfilter.

However, it also allows the car to suck in hot air from teh engine bay when under load which drops power.
The APR carbonio is enclosed and only allows the cold air form the front to enter the intake which remedies this problem.

On my R32 I cut the sides with a knife and bent the flap down to reduce hot air into intake.
Im guessing I benefit from more cold air in too

A bit OT but any opinions on the best after market set up these days?

                      Thanks guys

at least mine seems to be 'normal'! Does look like a slightly inefficient intake, in that it is offset from the airflow, so might lose a bit of ram-air effect. However I have faith in VW engineers that there is a reason for this design!

Coming from a Mazda CX7 turbo in which I tried the many DIY mods for intakes and exhaust (all of which compromised the car in some way)....I think I'll leave the GTI stock

                      ...for now

I presume it's to minimise the amount of water going into the intake. You'd notice that the pipe going into the intake/engine is higher than the opening at the front (grill side).
