  • GTi ECU reprograming recall

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this on here yet but VW are recalling most of the Mk5 GTis for a ECU reprogram to prevent a fault code issue. This started a couple of weeks ago and owners will be sent notification through the mail to book their vehicles in for the correction.
It means that at least APR programs are deleted from the ECU.
After the vehicle has been done thnose with APR reflashes have to return to there APR dealer and get reflashed free of charge.

I just went to book my golf in and was told by the dealer that if the vehicle had been "chipped" then VW said they cant do it because it could fry the computer. I am willing to get mine done, many have been done without any issues but maybe VW have had a problem with a "chipped" GTi?
I havent heard of any problems with any vehicles myself.
Not sure if anyone else have heard of any dramas?
    Cheers, Andrew

Hey Andrew - got my letter today too!

No trouble with the Oettinger / APR reflash - just pop into your dealer after your VW reflash & have it updated / reinstalled

I got my letter today too.

So, Guy, your recommendation would be for me to go ahead and get my car's ECU software updated by VW, and then book myself in with you to have the APR software re-installed?

            Cheers mate
            Richard

EDIT: I've just re-read the thread and yes, that is what you're saying! Sorry, long day.

Guys what does the ECU update do?

I got the letter for my Passat but no one has replied in the Passat section.

I was only told it updates the cars computer software, is there anything else?

I mentioned this on Vortex, but I have some information that leads me to believe that this 'reflash' is mainly to get cars in and to identify if they have been software tuned due to a 'increasingly large' amount of warranty claims.

I would be wary, and if the car is currently running ok, not bother.

                My advice is 'Modders Beware!'

                  So I'm guessing ...

... that if the new GTI owner either ignores this letter or phones up and says: "Thanks ... but no thanks." They'll mark you down on their list as chipped?

If they're doing it to new MK V GTIs and Passats ... it's only a matter of time before they go through the entire range, isn't it?

There seems to be several fixes - the early 05 cars (AXX Engine with the higher compression) it adresses the missfire issues.

it also corrects the checksum calculations that have appeared on numerous cars.

On the 06' (BWA engine - lower compression) - there is fuelling changes to prevent fuel cuts & also some changes to the cold start areas of the map - this also continues into the 07's as well (Still BWA engines).

It would apply to Passat's & Jetta's as well - they ran the same engines & similar software!

                      Guys,
Is this just for petrol engines or diesels too?
I haven't received a letter as yet and my be I won't if it applies only to petrol engines

I've got mine booked in for next week

Asked how long it would take and they said 30min to 2hrs. I asked why and they say some only take 30mins to do and others take up to 2hrs due to problems loading the update. So i have asked for a loaner for the day as i cant wait around 2hrs in case it takes that long..

Seems a bit strange to me. Maybe the ones they find chipped take longer as they are getting rid of the other software or trying to read it or something.

                          This raises a question ...

... if Dealers are 'flashing' customer's cars through ... say ... APR or whatever, surely there can be no comeback on the customer, right? I mean Guy has told me that he gets direct bookings through the dealers ... so those of us with a chipped car can't be held liable and lose our warranty. Is that the way it works, Guy?

                          Cheers,
                          Dave

My dad had his service and they updated his software without explaining it and erased his AMD software. They have told him sorry and he should have told them so as not to do it. So i'm guessing if you don't want the update you don't have to have it. I won't be getting mine done as the issues they are correcting were fixed with my reflash. From the sounds of it there was a flat spot issue they are trying to resolve but losing 40kw is much more of a flat spot let alone the lost money!

R32 is here and sounds awesome, loving the throttle blips on the down changes.
