  • mk4 gti trade-in

Hello folks, with the near certainty that petrol will be back to 1.50 by end of the year has made me entertain the thought of letting go of my mk4 gti and move to a tdi 2 comfortline/sportsline. Owning a gti is like wearing that black spiderman suit (for those you seen the movie you know what I mean)

Has anyone here done a similar trade-in? I would love to hear your experience.

      I own a chipped 2007 TDI
Wow factor is high for me. Had to buy 17" GTI wheels to keep the wheelspin down...........ESP helps
More economical ( 10% ) than unchipped - works for me
5,300ks in 1st month of ownership has convinced me of the benefits.

      cheers

Did u trade it in? Cause I just got one. Do you really save that much between the 1.8T and the 2.0 TDI?

Can anyone give a real life comparison of the consumption?

I can say as a MKIV 1.6 owner and now being a 2.0 TDI owner, even I am convinced that I am saving money on fuel.

          MKIV 1.6 = 650km/tank MAX
MKV 2.0 TDI = 500km with 1/3 tank left (sorry this is my first tank, no comparison)

As for a $ trade on the GTI, I am sure that you are going to be offered a poor figure in the current climate. Sorry to say...

          Good luck!

I've seen this a couple of times over the past 30 years. People jump out of perfectly good cars because of a slight saving in fuel costs, but end up taking a huge real hit in sale and purchase pricing.

If you drive around 20,000 kms per year, you might save about $1000 per year between the diesel and the GTI. If you drop $5000 or so on the trade in, then it doesn't seem all that cost effective.

True to this, but if you are upgrading from a car because it is 3-5 years old, it pays to look at a more economical option.

TDI 'economy' bandwagoners are out there, however, many realise now that they are more than a - b motoring and have better performance than the 2.0 FSI equivalents.

I think with release of the GT, things could get quite interesting with regards to resale value for mk4 gtis (which has been quite good) and even 2.0 TDIs and others.

My decision to switch won't be just for fuel economy, its also the speculative realisation that the mk4 resale value will be substantially degraded above its usual yearly decline, with this new GT entering the market.

A brief research on diesel engines tells me that its worst for the environment than petrol (emits less, but more potentially damaging substances). That's turned me off the TDI a little, although I realise this claim is based more on theory than practical facts/stats.

Funny how you weigh up all these things before purchasing but then throw it out the window when something catches your eyes.

                  Tell me about it.

                  Logic says GT

                  Vague sense says GTI

But I've just ordered an R32.

I'll just have to drive a bit less.

                    good luck to that.

not a bad choice at all. But did you consider the w12 first?

I'd love to see how much they'd charge for it - if it makes it into production. Only thing is, i doubt they could make it at a vaguely sensible/rational/practical price.

Obviously very spur of the moment .. hmm, i should be sensible and buy the TDI ..but I need more HP so i can get to work faster, so R32 then eh..
