My Golf 2.0 TDI (Pacific) got hit by some engine quirk while I was up on the Victorian High Country for a week. It was parked outside during and it gets a bit nippy at night. On one morning, I went to start the car and it wouldn't start. The PRNDS was flashing and when I tried to remove the key, it wouldn't come out, nor would it shift out of Park. After a few attempts at starting it finally did, but still the PRNDS lights were flashing and I had the exhaust system (looks like an engine) warning light on yellow. After trying to restart it again, all was okay, and I was able to shift into Drive, but the exhaust system light was still on.
So called VW Assist who advised that it may be a lambda sensor issue and drive it slowly to the nearest dealership. After limping it some 80kms to Wodonga Prestige, they took a look at it. Evidentally they were expecting us, and they attended to the car straight away. We were told we may have to leave the car with them for a couple of days in which case we would get a loan car.
About an hour later with a diagnostic check performed and everything reset, we were on our way. Still not sure what happened, but the only fault thrown up was the steering pump. Pump? I thought it was electric? Anyway - all sorted. But no other fault was found. So what caused the PRNDS lights to flash? RTFMing, there was a difficult to locate and vague description that if the DSG clutch is somehow engaged when the ignition is turned on, the car will not start.
Anyway, a big thankyou to VW Assist and Wodonga VW as they were extremely professional and got things sorted out with a minimum of fuss. I was very impressed.
