  • Anyone upgrading from Mark V Golf GTI to Mark VI?

    Hi all,

I was just interested to know how many people would be upgrading from the Mark V Golf GTI to the Mark VI GTI or R.

I am just trying to get an idea how much a 2005-2009 model GTI is worth and if everyone thinks they will drop in price now that the Golf R has come out or because there will be a lot upgrading to the newer model GTI with the EOFY sales currently on.

I'll be looking at the manual version of the GTI most likely with leather and sunroof and I'm not quite sure what colour I'll be going for yet. I'm in no hurry to buy and it will probably be closer to the end of the year before I get one depending on the market.

On CarSales the majority of 2005-2006 manual GTIs are listed over $30,000 but seem to have been listed for at least a month or so and redbook is listing them at low 20s. The DSGs strangely seem to be mostly listed for about $5000 less than the manual versions.

I've seen a few advertised for low 20s come up every now and then. Do they sell a lot lower than private list price?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Scott

I've been watching the market for a couple of months now and it seems to me that generally speaking in Victoria prices range from 28k-35k depending on year and mileage. For 28k you are looking at a manual 2006 model with about 80k on the clock and for 35k you are looking at a DSG 2008 model with 30k on the clock. Can't say I've ever seen a manual advertised for more than a DSG let alone 5k more - usually they are 2k cheaper. Interestingly Victoria seems to have consistantly higher prices than other states such as QLD.

I do agree though that most of these are advertised forever and the owners seem convinced that they can get these prices but clearly aren't. I don't think the free onroad deal has helped. As for redbook I think that pricing index is a load of nonsense. Don't know what trade in would be but knowing dealers maybe low 20's and then they resell the for low 30's.

Well I've been looking at a 3dr DSG for about 2 months now, and I can say that the prices in VIC are definitely alot higher than those for other states, with some decent deals to be had interstate (pinvidz's old car springs to mind). And as Scourge has mentioned, I know that 2 of the 3 on carsales in VIC right now have been there for at least 2 months, without a single budge on price.

At 35k though(+ stamp duty), I can't see why anyone would buy a 2 year old, previous model 3dr DSG when for another 6k at the moment you can drive away with a brand new one (base spec of course).

I guess when I said 5K cheaper I'm referring to the 2005/2006 DSG models that seem to popup every now and then for very low 20s and yet the cheapest manuals seem to be around 25K and have a lot more Ks. You're right about interstate being advertised cheaper.

You're figures of 28-35k are about what I have seen and I think I might hold on for a bit longer. I'm in no hurry to buy and I'd find low 30s hard to justify for a 5 year old car. Mind you I haven't driven the Mark V, seen plenty around and like the looks but if it drives 1/2 as good as the Mark VI GTI it'll be a very nice car (test drove the mark VI a month or so ago).

        Thanks,

        Scott

Very true. The 2 door Manual is around 39 drive away at the moment which is all so tempting, but $10,000 is $10,000

I've always been a fan of manual cars, never really driven anything too exciting before (Test drove the XR5 and a few other cars but was more impressed with the interior and overall feel of the golf). Do you really get the same experience from the DSG or is it just the convenience of the auto around town that sells the DSG for you?

I probably should test drive a DSG before I totally decide on the manual, theres just something inside me telling me not even to consider the DSG over a manual :p.

          Thanks,

          Scott

I don't really have much of an option anyway. We only have one carpark at the apartment (and funds for only 1 car) between my wife and I, and thus its either an auto car or I have to drive her everywhere. DSG it is then

Have to say though, I saw an ad for a xr5 demo w/ 200kms on the clock last weekend for $29.9k drive away, very very keenly priced, but no auto option

Even drive away new price is very very low 30s by the sounds of it. It's a fairly tempting car. If they spent a few more bucks on the interior, didn't fill it with fake carbon fibre, offered cruise control and a 5 seater in leather it would be a pretty tempting deal indeed

live in Melbourne, flew to sydney and drove her home the same day - one of the greatest days of my life (bar the inconsistant speed zones on the hume)

I had a pre-purchase inspection carried out on the car prior to me flying over

That's sounding like a better idea every day. I have the time to wait for one to show up in Victoria with the specs I want though. Glad to hear that it worked out for you!

Who did you get to do the pre-purchase inspection?
