Wheel arch wing extensions - fitting 18's

Hi all,

I'm just about to organise the purchase of a Golf Sportline for my girlfriend in Adelaide. It already has 18" R32 wheels fitted, but no wheel arch wing extensions - which according to all the Mark V golf brochures are mandatory when fitting 18's.

We live in NSW, so the car will need a blue slip before it can be registered in NSW. As you can see from the photo below, the wheels currently stick outside the wheel arches. Do you any of you know if the wheel arch wing extensions will need to be fitted? Do you any of you have them fitted? Do any of you know how much they cost? My understanding was that in NSW, wheels/tyres couldn't sit outside the guards.

If it really bothers you, I would weigh the cost of acquiring these OEM parts, prep and paint to match your car versus minor guarrdwork. They don't poke that far and as you can see above, they look hideous.

I have 17" Audi TT rims that will be pretty close to the same distance out, maybe a shade inside it, and I'd say you won't get 2 looks at it - I don't.

Are you sure you need a blue slip?

If worst comes to worst and they hit you up about it, i'd just find someone on here and borrow their wheels for a day.

Sovereign - Unfortunately any vehicle that is registered interstate requires a blue slip before being able to be registered in NSW

Mikinoz - thanks for that - we're hoping it'll pass too - when I posted this, we were trying to find info before committing to buy, but we just ponied up and bought it tonight, so we'll just try and see if it passes before applying any changes.

Schoona - I think if it doesn't pass blue slip, we'll investigate Guard Flaring to cover it or consider swapping someone for their 17's (anyone after some R32 wheels?)

The only 18" factory option wheels on the GTI where the Karthum (spelling) which are 18 x 8" wide and required the wings due to the offset.

The GTI 17" and the R32 18" were both 7.5" and neither required the wings.

Fitting the 18" R32 rims to the sportline is perfectly legal and requires no wings.

PS. Take the 18" rims off and fit 15" rims before she covers them in kerb rash Sidewalls are much more forgiving than alloy!

Don't forget the Pirelli... that has 18s from the factory with no wings...

We have 18" karthoum wheels on our 09 jetta.

We brought the rims off vw and had our mate fit them so we didn't have to get the extensions fitted.

No way do you need fender extensions.

They look hidious IMO. To me they look like a slap on auto barn job.

I reckon they must be replica wheels due to the offsets.

Actually you do need the extension winglets to legally fit the 18 x 8" karthoum wheels.

Volkswagen have a better idea as to what is and isn't required to sell a car 'legally' in this country.

I just checked and the Pirelli's are indeed 18X7.5 ... just an FYI really.

The question is Silver Dub, do your wheels sit outside the guards?

If not, then no worries...

But If so, when your car finally gets 3 yrs old and needs a pink slip (provided you're in NSW and not some dodgy state that doesn't require roadworthies) you'll find that unless the mechanic is dodgy, your inspection will be failed. Even more annoying would be getting pulled over at an RBT and the police officer going "nice rims, here's your defect...". Or the worst scenario, you have an accident and the insurance assessor notices your rims are outside the guards and denies your claim. These are all the things I'm concerned about. But I guess we'll just see what the blue slip place says about them...

Maverick - I hope my GF doesn't read your post, otherwise you might want to watch the road carefully if your ever walking on the footpath But seriously, thanks for the info on the R32 rims. If Lorenz is right, then that would explain the outside guard feature of these rims...

I am fully aware that vw fits the wing extensions for legal reasons.

I was just stating that i didn't like the wing extensions and because vw would only fit the wheels with the extensions i had someone else fit them so i could have them without.

To my understanding wing extensions are fitted so that the wheels and or tyres to not stick out further than the guard, Am i correct?

We have the 18x8 karthoum wheels on our 09 jetta and in fact they do not stick out past the guard at all, infact they sit in by about 5mm on the front and more on the rear, So therefor they should be 100% legal.

Please someone correct me if i'm wrong.
