Top Gear M3 vs Prius in Fuel consumption test.

It's not necessarily what you drive but how you drive it!

As for mods: I had an 03 STi for a few years, modded it to produce 40% more power and it did run more efficiently than stock in normal driving conditions (better intake, exhaust and fueling curves) HOWEVER... if I put the boot into it everywhere, well I drained the tank rather quickly.

Like I said, around 12-13 for most of my driving. Sometimes a little more if I'm really on it. I don't think all the tunes/mods make much difference until you sink the boot in, then the fuel goes......

Precisely. All these engines are so efficient, it really comes down to how much horsepower they're making. Horsepower = fuel.

As you can see economy varies greatly, depending on how you drive the car. Best was on a freeway/highway country run. Worst was giving a bit of stick and mostly city driving.
Used fill to fill to calculate NOT MFD.

I have changed my exhaust, if you do a full exhaust upgrade you will see a huge improvement in fuel economy.
lol shows there is something wrong with my foot, i do something similar probably 35 with traffic and 10 minutes without. But mine is so much worst for some reason.

So how do you work out fill to fill??? because how do you know exactly how much fuel was used?

Always need to fill to the top of the tank. Then ask for a tax reciept, number of liters is printed on reciept. Or just write it down from the pump. this gives you the amount of fuel used for the distance travelled between fills.

wow, thats pretty economical but probably normal revs etc but still very good, maybe i should move further away!

I have also noticed why my fuel consumption is so high, because i go through like 20 speed bumps a day, accelerate and brake... traffic is not to bad, because you don't accelerate.

that is extremely good, do mods make it eat even more fuel??

because if i get mods done and it does eat more fuel, i will only get 300km out of a tank lol
The car comes normal from factory at a safer fuel level which is richer than once its properly tuned. Leaning out the mixture (getting the perfect fuel:air ratio) produces HP and better milage. Don't get me wrong, if you're redlining every gear, you wont get very good milage.. but normal driving, you will notice the difference.. I certainly did. And I thought the HPFP and Stage 2+ tune would be worse, in fact it made my milage even better!

I have a 2008 GTI, with no mods.

On the highway, I can complete a return trip from Townsville to Cairns (700kms return) and still have 100kms to 120kms to empty ... so over 800kms to a tank. Most of this driving is at 100kph and with cruise control on.

Around town I will get approximately 8lts per 100kms, or close to 700kms to a tank. Remembering that this is in Townsville so no slow city crawls or traffic jams.

I doubt you have ever given it a squirt then...Kinda defeats the purpose of a GTI (IMO).

Obviously dependent on driving style and traffic conditions. The example of 800kms per tank on the highway is with the cruise control set to 100kph ... rarely a situation to "give it a squirt" in such conditions, only the occassional overtaking.

Unless you are constantly stop/starting on the highway, I would expect any GTI owner (with no mods) to acheive the same fuel consumption figures for this same drive!
