Fuel Consumption

Hey guys, just curious what is the fuel consumption like for your car? I'm mostly interested in the Golf GTI, but other cars are more than welcome.

I've had the pirelli for a few weeks now, and it seems to eat fuel like crazy. I know different ways of driving effects the fuel consumption, highway or city differs as well, maybe even different fuel?

So here are a few things I want to know...

1. So the fuel tank is 55l and from my quick glance at the manual, it does say 5l in reserve??
2. For the reading in the dash (the km count down) once it hits 0km how many more litres are still in the tank?

Next few points are more general.

3. How many kms can you get out of your 55l (golf) tank
4. How do you drive your car (not looking for tips, more like trying to compare my driving with others)

For the past 2 full tanks... the first tank i drove from Canberra back to Sydney which is around 300km, and i think i got around 500km on a full tank, which is 10l/100km.

My last and current tank... i have driven around 300km (city) and the indicator shows 70km left... if that is the case, i'm using 12-13l/100km... yes i have stepped on it occasionally as i'm still having a bit of fun in my car.

But what should i expect?

If I take it easy, REAL easy I can get 11ltr/100k, but that's if I really baby it, and that's mostly all city/suburbs peak hour driving.

I tried driving around like a poosoy just to see what I could get, and yeah 11ltr/100 was the best I ever got. That's on a very heavily modified pirelli (Tune, Exhaust, FMIC, HPFP etc).

If I drive normally, I get around 12-13ltr/100 (that's with plenty of spurts), and if I really stick the boot in I'll average around 15 - and that's over a full tank. I really have to be giving it stick to use up that kind of fuel though.

I'd say that most petrol golfs would get very similar milage, it's obviously only when the boost comes in when you start using all that extra fuel... Even my old Mazda 323 (1.8 litre, non turbo) gets 10.8ltr/100kays.... It's all so close it's not worth measuring.

Of course those diesel boys will chirp in now... Off ya soapbox fellas.

I get around 800Kms per tank ... generally 6.2 to 6.4L/100Km. That's because I drive that performance vehicle the MK4 1.6 ltr . Thats a 60% Freeway, 40% lights situation, but the Perth Freeway traffic can be stop start during peak hours!

Don't rely on any "reserve" - some VAG vehicles run out when the DTE is 0km (and IMO so they should, otherwise the reading is inaccurate). Running dry is a PITA and may not be good for your fuel system and engine.

The only way to get an accurate figure for your actual fuel consumption is to use the "fill to fill" method. The trip computer is usually optimistic to some extent (in some case up to 25% !)

My Octavia RS (same motor as Mk 5 Golf GTI) usually gets around 10l/100km, or 8 if I take it easy (which doesn't happen very often).

I get about 9-10L/100km for city driving (usually fanging it a bit when I get the chance) in my Pirelli. And have gotten down to 7-8L/100km on the freeway.

Don't rely on the MFD, it is not accurate. I use the fill to fill method of calculating my fuel consumption that Greg mentions.

In normal with the traffic driving in my 2008 R32 I get about 11.6l/100k around town and 9.7 l/100k on a good highway run.
I measure fill to fill, ie top up, drive..................... top up and divide into kilometers driven. /100

So basically the 8.1L/100km on the brouchure is extremely hard to achieve!!!

So i'm guessing the turbo is the reason for high fuel consumption? since the R32 can do pretty good l/100km but with a much bigger engine!

The reason for the high fuel consumption is because the car is so nice to drive - you can't help yourself but put your foot down on the accelerator...

BTW, I get anywhere between 450-580km per tank city driving.

that is so much better than what i'm doing! i'm not getting anywhere near 450km at the moment. let alone 580km! I live in the city and drive in the city (i mean cbd city as well)

I was looking at the MDF and the previous owner was driving it for 9l/100km (car 8000km old). And for the past 2 weeks it has gone up to 10l/100km already lol.

You might want to see your doctor. Get him to check the lead content of your blood. Get him to extract a sample from your right foot.

Or a bad batch of fuel maybe, if you also refilled from the same servo.

I've read on here and on the other forums of people getting very bad economy with V power. Try using BP and Mobil instead.

Why stress about fuel economy anyway? It's not like those few bucks per hundred kms add up to anything meaningful.

Plant that foot and don't worry about it!
