  • What next after APR remap

I've had the APR remap on my MY07 GTI for approximatly 10 months now and all I can say, is that I still smile from ear to ear every time I drive the car. Besides using a little more fuel from when it was stock, I have no major complaints. In fact, the extra fuel is worth the look of horror on the faces of V6/V8 drivers when you leave them standing.

Anyway, I am now contemplating modifiying further and was wondering what the next step should be? Exhaust, Downpipe, fuel pump, intercooler, CAI, it would appear that the shopping list is quite diverse.

I am restricted to a budget of $2K and want to spend it wisely. My thinking at the moment is with the exhaust, but the APR unit is over my current budget, so would a Milltek import be an option and if so, how whould this affect the APR remap or APR down pipe should I fit that at a later date?

I'm keen to know what others have done and their experiances.

    Cheers
MY10 R, DSG, Recaros, ACC, Dynaudio, MDI, Stage 2 APR, CAI, APR HPFP

$2K will get you a decent intake (Carbonio) and an APR downpipe.

Doing it with APR mean you will get another ECU upgrade to take advantage of the DP (adds 10+kw) which you don't when getting a Miltek etc.

Instead of the 188kw you've got now, you'd be looking at around 205kw ....

        nope they are different.

Also upgrading to a map to suit any brand dp should be free shouldnt it? So im not convinced you should have to buy a specific brand just because of that. Although I guess you would want to check with your APR dealer.

One thing to be careful of with dps is if you buy one from overseas and it ends up cracking you will have a hard time getting any warranty support/repair.

Thanks for the corrections, for some reason i was under the impression that they were.

I know that Unitronic have a Stage 1+ that adapts to all bolt on mods i.e CAI and DP.

But yes to the suggestion above, downpipe should be the next item on the shopping list!

APR RSC is 100% US made, Milltek is UK / China, so certainly not rebadged.

This is the MKVI layout (different rear to the MKV but a better overall picture)

Software upgrade is free from APR if you purchase the APR downpipe, if you purchase your own downpipe / exhaust, then the dealer can charge labour if they deem it appropriate.

We can not guarantee or warrant that any other brands of exhaust will perform 100% with the APR software!

Limited lifetime warranty on the APR exhaust through our 15 dealer network around the country.

FWIW, I have APR stage 1 map on my Polo GTI.

Changing other elements (dump pipe, intake opening, TIP, diverter valve, FMIC) have all improved the cars performance AFTER the chip. I don't have any issues with the power and things have only improved.

As Sharkie states, the benefit with going APR again is the program upgrade. If you were not getting the ECU change thrown in, I would encourage you to get a different intake setup which is less pretty and more performance and go to a quality exhaust shop who should be able to fabricate something very similar for a chunk less.

There can be a peace of mind knowing its all APR though, some hold this more highly than others...

Having done it 'all' I would say without reservation, the next step should be coilovers and better rubber. That'll add the most performance gains for your $$$s.

The next step in terms of horsepower should be a K04. All the rest is nice, but you'll get into the law of diminishing returns very quickly.

the advantage with a cat back upgrade is you get a much better, meatier exhaust note. it probably wont do anything noticeable for performance, but that may not be your primary objective.

Its like putting after-market alloys on, i'm sure the primary justification isnt their lighter weight and enhanced suspension benefits!

if you get it tuned eg. chip... would that void the warranty?

Only if it has directly affected the piece of equipmemnt that requires fixing under warranty.

And APR have a warranty over their equipment anyway.

oh ok... just checking, i probably won't get it tuned anyway, was just curious.

eg. APR ECU Upgrade would vw know when i service the car?

Great responses in less than 6 hours of the original post.

To clarify, I'm not concerned about warranty as the car has over 81,000kms.

Kryten2001 - would love to go the K04 route, but my budget wouldn't allow such lavishness. Out of interest, what sort of $$$ are we taking about for this modification?

2k wont get you very far.. exhaust is the next step though and probably the most expensive.. Full turbo back milltek is just as expensive as APR (couple hundred dollars difference when I inquired about a year ago).. both about 3k installed.

If you're budget is strictly 2k, I would suggest things like engine mounts, coilovers, anti lift kit, sway bars etc.. At least that way you will get the extra power you have currently, to the ground and not wasted in 1st and 2nd gear.
