Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Extendable sunvisors

    Hey folks,

I was in my friend's MkV GTI this evening and his sunvisors are extendable. I've got a MkV Jetta and they aren't extendable - I tried and all I succeeded in doing was pulling them off their joints. Just wondering what vehicle's come with the extendable sunvisor?

I can't seem to find any of the usual suspects (tmtuning, ecstuning, namotorsports, dubaddiction ...) selling an extendable sunvisor. Anyone know where to get one for the Jetta?

    cheers.

    Hey Spiff,

I have a GT Sport and mine are not extendable. I think only the GTI's & R32's have them. IIRC this was mentioned in a previous thread not long back.

    Good luck on your hunt

The ones in my Pirelli and GT can be unhinged on the inside and pushed to shade the side window.

Is that what you mean by extendable?

Hi Fanaki, do you recall what the thread discussed? I've searched and can't find any threads talking about it. Maybe it was just mentioned in passing? Or maybe people call sunvisors by another term? .. hmm..

triode12, I couldn't even find a pic for you. But after unhinging and shielding sunlight from the side, the extendable ones allow the sunvisor to slide out further along the hinge.

In the few months I've owned my car, I've already found myself wanting it so often in the evenings.

          Spiff, here's a start.

And Triode, as per what Spiff said

Right thread, Fanakai. I think the discussion's on the first page (I was one who yearns for the extendable variety).

AFAIK, VW have deleted this feature on the later GTIs too (I stand to be corrected) in their relentless penny-pinching of the Mk5...

It's not something easily remedied in a GT/GTSport either, as they have the (almost) white headlining, whereas the GTIs have the coal mine black, making swapping not really viable.

So, I suffer in my jocks...

              Cant do on my R32

i think if you have visor lights you dont have the option.

                Thanks Fanakai.

I'm going to see if I can pull apart my mate's (MKv GTI) sunvisor and see what it's like. Perhaps it's just a telescopic version of ours.

Managed to pull my mate's and mine's apart.
                  Some pics:

                  How it works.

This seems to be the best position for removing the sunvisor. Twist it as you apply force to pull it out. When putting it back, make sure the connectors are touching.

                  Apart.

The short and long of it.. It wasn't telescopic as I thought. There's no difference between the connectors of either, but you obviously can't use the extendable sunvisor on your regular 'stalk/connector' since it won't reach the connection, and vice versa because the regular sunvisor would be sitting too far out on the extendable stalk.

The screw that lets you remove the stalk/connector.

Only thing I can think of short of some radical cutting up of the sunvisor is to check the wreckers for GTI and R32 parts.

Maybe a leftfield suggestion here but could it be that the extendable ones were only fitted on 3 door vehicles due to the extra door & window length?

Seems to make sense to me

My mate has the 5-door gti.
I think it might be differentiation, but I sure wish it would come standard.

My 2008 3 door R32 does not have extendable visors.

pull hard? haha. that's wot my mate said to me.
seriously though, i was just repeating what others have suggested - might be in r32 and gti. guess it's not 100%

                            Good work Spiff!!!

Maybe try VW service dept and see if they can order the part in for you. It'll prob cost you but it's another option if all else fails.

Sorry but I fail to understand how is this feature useful?

When you turn in a different direction, the sun will no longer be shining over that position of the car... which would then mean re-adjusting the visor....
