  • DSG loosing drive after brisk right hand turn

Hi, i'm re-posting this as i'm curious if anybody else had this problem.

And what damage (potentially) does it do to the transmission?

Our '05 Golf TDI 1.9 (we are the second owners from 40 000km, 46 000km now. The car lost drive after doing a brisk right hand roundabout and then going straight. The engine flared up like when there is not enough oil in a conventional automatic transmission.
Also lost drive on take off once and was slow to engage starting to reverse up hill.
Transmission had two faults logged. Don't know which as the operator reset them and didn't tell us.

Changed trans oil today (myself) but only two liter drained out and it was quite greyish.
Refilled 5.5 liter and 1 liter drained out after i checked the pan temperature on the sump bowl with an infra red sensor (35 deg. C.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated re. the flaring (like missed gear) and slow reverse engagement as well as loosing drive when taking off from an intersection. The car just 'crawled' through but proceeded as normal once the engine was turned off and restarted

In the meantime i thoroughly test drove the car going through a round about fast enough to induce massive understeer (these cars handle a bit like a shopping trolley) and found no transmission loosing drive/engine flare. So, it was low oil in the DSG. Wonder if the factory under filled or the previous owner had problems and the Dealer 'repaired' it?

I've spoken with the previous owner yesterday and was assured that no work was carried out on the DSG (to her knowledge).
The car was serviced 'by the book' (service records supplied) by big VW dealerships in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne

    Cheers, Sepp

Well you might be on the right track, strange re the low level? You did use the extension on the plug when you drained?

Is is still covered by VW warranty?

Does your coolant tank have oil in it? If the coolant has oil and the gearbox oil is grey/brown then your gearbox cooler has gone - new box required! Like above did you take out the black level tube when you drained the oil? Also not sure how accurate your checking of the temp will be as you are reading the heat from the metal casing not the oil inside. Did you check the oil level in "park" with the engine running after holding for 3 seconds in each gear?....VW....................

        Thanks guys!

No oil in the coolant. Yes, i did take the black tube out to drain the transmission fluid.
Went through the gears prior to draining excess fluid off.
Temperature should be OK as there is a 10 deg. C. range. I took the lower one from the transmission case so i figure the oil inside is a little warmer but within range. I'm confident on the change of fluid procedure after all the transmission had only 2 liters of oil in it and now it has at least the right level/quantity.

What i don't know and like to find out is if the low level of oil did do any damage or accelerated some wear in the DSG?

No warranty. It's a 2005. So far the transmission shifts very smooth after the oil change.

BTW. anybody with a little mechanical aptitude can do the DSG oil change in about an hour. Less, the second time. You just have to rig up a drain plug filler, funnel, hose and you need something to measure temperature.
