  • Backup RNS510 Maps?

    Hi everyone

Just got my MkV GTi and I would like to upgrade the RNS510 with the latest firmware, but have read the cautions about it deleting the music and maps etc. The music is not a big deal, but the maps are. The dealer did not give me a disc with them on it and he said he had the service guys load the latest on the hard drive.....so I don't want to destroy the maps. Is there any way to get the maps off the RNS510 to a SD card or something?

Do I have any other options?

I think my version is an older one because my 4Gb SD card did not work but the 2Gb one did!

    Thanks

Might be able to help you out if you get stuck, I have a CD with maps March 2009, and the latest firmware upgrade. When I did the upgrade it didn't delete my maps, but did take about an hour to load up then went thru a reset and all was normal with the addition of the new firmware features.
Not sure if mine are latest Maps but couldn't be too far off.....

If anyone has the latest or later addition than mine I would be appreciative to get a copy loaded?

      Here's a solution:

Go to your dealer, complain that the RNS510 intermittantly freezes, and they'll do the firmware upgrade, and reload the maps for you, fee of charge.

Who did you purchase your car off?

It makes me angry to hear this. You should have received the map DVD disc when you purchased the car. It is worth $550.

Our dealer tried to do the same when I got my car but I had to insist and at one point create a ruckus to get our copy.

I'd go back to your dealer and demand a copy.

People are being quoted around $1100 for these discs. Again, you paid for it when you ordered a car with the RNS, and it should have been given to you with the car.

I have a car ordered with this system, and it will not be leaving the yard without the disc.

As everyone has said, you are entitled to the disc. VW Australia have confirmed ths to me in writing - if you haevn't got it, go back to the dealer and politely but firmly advise them that you are entitled to the disc, and if they don't give it to you, contact me and I will give you a contact at VW Aus to complain to.

Remember....you are entitled to a disc if you buy a car fitted with the RNS. If you purchase the system in the aftermarket, then it is just the system that you are buying.

An ebay seller (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/RNS510-SAT-NA...item4a9df133c4) is currently selling some for a very reasonable price.

I purchased one, which has just arrived. Genuine. Arrived very quickly.

Maybe that's where his disc ended up?

Hmm. I didn't get a disc when I bought my jetta at the dealer. They said I could come back and get updated maps for free. (Still, I wonder if they will remember when, one day the people whom I bought the car off no longer work there).

Question. Is there a need to get the disc (assuming it's just maps) when.. say in a few years, the maps get updated anyway?

They get updated, but you don't get them unless you feel like buying them (or $1200 or so). I don't know that I'd trust a dealer to give you the update, seeing he was in the process of ripping off something you'd actually paid for at the time.

Some firmware updates also delete the maps.

Wow! $1200? For the digital version (ok..a lot more enhanced version) of a street directory?

If firmware updates delete the map, and you don't have the DVD, that means the nav is basically useless? crikey!

Now, I wish they would make updates available online so we can just download them for a fraction of the cost (say $29.95 - the cost of a street directory or thereabouts) and update it ourselves.

$1200 is apparently the VW quoted price, and as such ranks right up there. Previous systems that I've owned have been dramatically overpriced at half of that.

As for the price of a street directory, and online, I almost choked on my coffee. These maps are seen as a source of income by Sensis and VW (and other makers). I'm sure they sell virtually none, because of the price, but that doesn't mean they'll reach any sort of sensible price any time soon. Or ever.

It is a bizarre marketing decision by someone. Whereis sell the new map disc for the MFD2 system (previous model to RNS510) directly for under $300. VW Aus tell me that the price for the discs they sell is because they buy them from VW Germany and they tell me that they are not making big markup on them. I'm not sure if I believe the whole story LOL.
