Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Gran wanted her old car back today as she had to go to see her dressmaker (!), so I volunteered to drop it off and use her GTI for the day. Well, why not?

Some early impressions driving around town( maybe my only impressions as she'll have it back soon)
    - great seats that hold you better than anything I've driven lately.
    - I didn't realise there was an S position below Drive - nice!
    - spins its front wheels easily from the lights
    - ride is tight but improves with speed
    - air cond is quiet but effective (33 degrees today)
    - some turbo lag but not much
    - DSG is faultless and way better than other sequential style boxes I've tried.
    - great fun to drive and I haven't been over 80km/h yet!

Nah. The oldest GTI driver in Oz is in his early 80's. He traded his Statesman in on a blue 5-door GTI with DSG at Frizelles on the Gold Coast. And apparently, the Statesman, which was only a couple of years old, was hotted right up! Obviously enjoys his speed, and made a fine choice getting out of the stretched Dunnydore and into the GTI!

I took the GTI up the freeway today to see what it is like at higher speeds. The power and gearbox work to good effect in this sort of driving. The steering is a bit lighter than I'm used to but it is accurate and easy to place the car. I tried the cruise control but that isn't much fun on a car that loves to accelerate so much. I was happier with the DSG in Drive and then using the paddles for occasional fun rather than keeping it in manual. The manual pattern on the gearstick seems opposite to my BMW's so that could be a problem for me!

I wouldn't want much more power with front wheel drive - mind you, I'm more familiar with RWD. I guess you get used to the different feel though.

Overall, very impressed. The only thing that disappointed was the radio. Is there an upgrade available from the factory or dealer?

Edit: PS, thanks for the positive comments on the other cars. Please tell my wife as she's always at me to sell them.

OK, time to bump an old thread - I hope you don't mind.

Gran had her 80th birthday last week. (I guess she was 77 back then, not 76 ). She's still driving the GTI.

Is the old guy up the Coast still alive/driving a GTI. I figure if my MIL keeps going, she might outlive him to be Australia's oldest GTI driver.

                          Happy Birthday, Gran!

I've seen her GTI around, but never got a look at the driver - does she still like her Golf?

God damn!!! you have one eceletic group of cars in your garage. The GTI must seem like a corolla in comparison to your exotics. Uber jealous.

Your granny is very lucky to have a GTI, good choice in cars, abit of poke and unrivalled safety features onboard.

She loves it. Mind you, it probably needs a decent run as she only does 2,000km or so per year.

I reckon the GTI can hold its head up any company. It is a very complete car.
