  • Questions Regarding MY08 GTI

Looking at buying a second hand MKV GTI and it appears that the MY08 model has two advantages over previous models:

    - There's a full screen MFD.

    - There's an AUX socket in the centre console.

To assist in making a decision between cars it would be really useful to get some information about both these advantages. Specifically:

1 - What specific functionality does the full screen MFD offer over the half screen? Searching reveals that there is extra functionality but not the specifics on what the extra functionality provides...

2 - Is the AUX socket actually a standard feature in the MY08 GTIs? Some forum searching suggests that some might not have this feature...

    Any information/ideas would be appreciated!

My MY08 GTI doesn't have the AUX socket. Some MY08s do, but I missed out

Mine didn't have the AUX socket either. The main advantage with the full height MDF is that you can set some of the options that you would otherwise need vag.com for, such as how long the headlights stay on, whether to unlock the driver's door only or or the doors and so on.

Also, some My08's had the under seat drawers.

1/ The full MFD can allow you to change settings for going home function, door lock functions and would be useful if you upgrade to the factory sat nav as it will integrate with the MFD.

2/ from what I know, the AUX socket is NOT standard and was an optional extra.

Except Pirellis perhaps. I've got an AUX socket in mine.

If that's a complete list of what is different then I'm not so fussed about it. I thought there might be quite a few settings that you "miss out on" with the half screen MFD but it doesn't sound like that's the case.

Redbook suggests that the AUX port is a standard feature. The MY09 GTI I drove definitely had it (non Pirelli) so I wonder when this was introduced... Guess I might have to add "iPod Connector" to my list of wanted features...

The Aux socket was standard on the MY08 and is printed in all the brochures.

The Aux in socket isnt on any of the early MY08s that I have seen. Mine included. It seems to be something they added a couple months in.

It's on the MY08 spec sheet and those that have asked for it have had it fitted at no charge. Who knows why most cars got it and some didn't

So theoretically if I bought a MY08 that didn't have it, there's a possibility I could get it fitted if the car was still under warranty... Interesting!

Unlikely, if you were the original purchaser and raised it with the dealer soon after delivery you could but after this amount of time I doubt it.

It's an easy fit and the parts are under $50 so no biggy anyway. The MFD is the main reason I'd be going for the MY08 as there are a lot of extra options that you don't get with the half height plus you get music info and sat nav directions (if you fit a RNS 510 later) plus you get all the telephone controls like phone book if you fit a VW car kit.

I'm happy to give this a go really. I assume its just a matter of getting access to the back of the HU and plugging in a cable that you route to the centre console (or anywhere you choose I guess?)... No need to enable the AUX channel on the HU or anything?

I guess this is my biggest concern. "A lot of extra options" is good to know, but without knowing what they are its hard to make decisions. It may seem weird that I'm focusing on this so much but at the price point I want to buy a car at - the decision between a MY07 and MY08 is somewhat important.

So far it seems that you get:

                            - Ability to control how many doors unlock from the remote by default
                            - Ability to adjust how long the headlights stay on when you "come home"
                            - Music Info and Sat Nav integration (if you fit the RNS 510)
                            - Telephone controls (if you fit a VW car kit)

                            Does that sound comprehensive?

My Jan 08 GTI has both the AUX socket & under seat draws so I thought they were standard.

                              Something off topic:

I noticed I have a button that looks like "{!} set" button next to the ESP button. I believe this may be something to do with the tyre pressure, however I don't know how to use it and I can't find it anywhere in the manual. Anyone ever played around with it?
