    Hi Guys,

Unfortunately for me, I hada nail stuck in the corner just off the wall of the tyre where its not repairable.

As i only recently had my tyres rotated, the backs to the front and the fronts to the back.. i was told 2 tyres had a max 5000kms lefts before they were unroadworthy. After further inspection, i would agree that those two tyres would need replacing shortly. Anyways, today i got this nail stuck in 1 of the tyres (had to be one of the good ones with ****load of tred left) so opted to get 4 brand new tyres.

Due to the fact i was quoted $420 per corner for Goodyear Eagle F1 Assym's, i opted to go cheaper and get Toyo TEO Plus' for $230 a corner (stock GTI Mark V rims).

Has anyone else had these tyres of know much about them? After reading alot of reviews, they appear to be overly possitive.

$420 for Goodyear Eagles is getting bent over! Lucky you didn't do it.

Only ever had experience with Toyo R1R and they were awesome!

I had a set of Toyo Teo Plus's fitted to a '95 Fairmont, excellent tyre, good handling and appeared to wear well although I didn't keep the car long enough to really tell. Just fitted a set of Kumho KU 37's to an '05 GTI (under $200 a corner) and so far they feel great on the road, super quiet and handle very well

Why? The tyres are the best performing tyres out there at the moment and they are the only part of the car that keeps you in contact with the road. ~$1600 for tyres on a $45,000 performance car is nothing.

Reviews don't show the same when compared against other tyres under identical conditions during testing. This is the only way to compare tyres that is accurate.

What a load....$1680 for Goodyear Eagles when you can get sooo many other sets that are as good or better for $1200-$1400 is getting porked.

I believe getting out and driving is the best way to test my tyres, but thats just me!

Name one tyre that outperforms the Eagle F1 Assym's?

Name one tyre that is as good as the Eagle F1 Assym's?

Not a single review has placed a tyre equal or above the Eagle F1 Assym's.

I'm glad that I was "porked" as you put it because the F1 is a fantastic tyre that performs excellently all around under all conditions.

That's fine if you're happy to guess if a tyre is any good or value for money but reading tyre reviews is the only way to select a tyre unless you have the resources to buy a large number of tyres, hire a test track and do blind tests on a large number of different road surfaces and conditions.

If your happy I am happy!

I haven't read reviews on Eagles. I have read reviews before, but generally go largely on personal recommendation and experience of both my tyres and those of my mates with decent cars.

I believe that my Yoki Advan AD08 would outperform Eagle on dry performance alone (happy to give it a crack at a track but according to your profile you are a fair trek north!), but given other factors like wear, comfort and wet performance (none of which makes me tick), I can see how others perceive them as better tyres.

Having said all of that off topic stuff, my "gut feel" is that the Toyo's are not a bad buy for a daily driver at $230 a tyre. Take that for what its worth, probably not much

                I'm with you Maverick.

yes., I can form my own views on how good or great I think a tyre is, but what am I comparing it with? I dont have a stack of brand new tyres to test back to back, so my best impression is what my new tyre is like compared to the bald ones ive just removed, hardly an objective comparison.

I rely on the dozens of worldwide back to back tests that all reach the same conclusion that the goodyear Assym is the best road tyre out there, and by the far the best in the wet.

I have a set on my big heavy GT-P and they are great, and whats more I'm expecting to get around 30k from them which is also great for a soft tyre (on a big car).

They are a bit expensive, but no more than other big performance brands, so next time I'll be importing from tirerack.

I think the important thing to remember is tho, that there are other great brands out there, that arent quite as good, but are fantastic value for money, just depends whether the are willing to dish out a whole load more cash for a smallish improvement in performance (law of diminishing returns)

You did the right thing. Why fork out more than $1600 when you can buy the same product for just under $1000 (including shipping) from www.tirerack.com?

And anyway, the F1A's were the best up until 2008, when the new Pirelli PZero took over as the best performance tyre* - as tested by the Germans from AutoZeitung in March 2008 using a MkV Golf GT, later confirmed by the English at AutoExpress (owned by the same company that publishes Evo) in September 2008 using a MkV Golf GTI. Both tests had the F1A's and both cars used 225/45 R17 tyres.

I just put 235 Adrenaline RE001's on for $245 a corner fitted. Current Bridgestone special. Very happy with them. Bit more flex on initial turn in, but it's a bigger air bag size, and being compared to very worn out conti's which were probably slipping instead.

Interesting Diesel Vert, Motor Magazine just did their giant tyre test only 2 months ago and still rate the goodyear as the best overall tyre.

I do think it depemds on the conditions on the day and the tyre size as well, as some tyres do better in different sizes.

I have commented previosly that some tyres are specially made by tyre manufacturers in conjuction with car manufacturers and the cars are custom tuned to suit the tyres. At least wth the Goodyear, they arent OEM for anyone, so you know that the results are going to be fairly repeatable, whatever car you choose to instal them on

Dear John (always wanted to write a Dear John letter)

Are you aware there is an old Eagle - the directional GSD3 & a new Eagle called the F1 Assymetric. They are as different as chalk & cheese, infact, even the GSD3 had hugely variable performance results depending on where it was made.

The F1 Assymetric is a very good tyre, as Mav said, it wins many tyre comparisons, although the new Pirelli appears to be about to change all that.

The tyre they tag Toyo Teo, I know nothing about but at least it has good alliteration.

Dear Brad (nowhere near the same effect )

Yep. Aware of that. They are certainly not the worst value tyre out there, but I dont believe they are the best value at $420 a corner.....others may disagree, but if we all liked the same the world would be boring!

Of course they would - the AD08's are R-compound tyres. No normal performance tyre (PZero, F1A, CSC3, etc.) would stand a chance.

Yes, when people refer to a tyre as being "the best", what they usually mean is "it provides the best compromise of all the properties of a tyre". People shouldn't claim that "x" tyre is the best without stating a qualifier.

That test didn't include the new PZero's unfortunately, and they only tested seven road tyres, which is disappointing.

That goes without saying really. They used an Audi S4 which is AWD and has 245/40 R18 tyres. The diffference in drivetrain and tyre size doesn't necessarily mean that the test is irrelevant to us, but we shouldn't take it to heart. In any tyre test, unless they are using the same car (or the same class at least) with the same tyre size one is running, then you can only look at it as a generalisation.
