Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • DSG Warranty extentions

This may be of interest with those of you who are concerned about their service life of their DSG unit.

I recieved a letter today from VW notifying me my DSG gets the 10yr 100k extended warranty. I just thought I would post up this info because with as much time that has gone by since I heard about the extended warranty, I thought I was not going to be among one of the chosen few. Sound like the U.S get all the benafits.
Maybe we should follow this up within this forum and see if others are getting DSG problems.
My GT TDI's, DSG I noticed is not as smooth as when new. More noticable at slow speeds. At my first service (15000km), VW performed the standard service and reflashed the DSG program for smooth running? There was a slight improvment.
This I think was in response to me complaining that intermitantly my car was sluggish in acceleration from idle. Sometimes the car would catch me out with fast approcing cars and my car would bog down for seemingly miniuts (seconds).
I assumed it was the turbo not spooling up, but the service departments response, was it possibly the DSG not changing properly? The bogging down issue is not as bad!

            We may have similiar issues.
REcently got our 2.0 TDI DSG back from 15,000 service and the dealer's response to my voiced concern that it bogs down every so often from stationary, usually coming out of a side street, was I am too quick on the pedal, and to learn to feed power on. I wouldnt mind an independent view of this. Anyone else affected?

Actual wording, "Acceleration tardy, Normal opperation for DSG, pedal needs to be caressed."

People tend to forget that it is still a manual gearbox, and still needs to be driven in a similar fashion.

Try just cracking the throttle open initially, before flooring it. As with a manual car, you'll still need to anticipate your take-off.

Or alternatively VW could re-program the engine/DSG control programs so that when a driver asks for vigorous acceleration the car would immediately deliver what was asked, rather than expect drivers to remember unusual driving techniques in certain circumstances because they happen to be driving a "computer controlled manual gearbox", not a true auto.

I have read many complaints about lengthy "DSG lag" from so many different drivers (and experienced it myself), and I believe someone will get killed one day because of it, but IMO it is entirely avoidable with proper programming (and yes, when I talk about computer programming I am talking about an area where I have over 20 years of professional expertise). I predict that there will be some serious litigation due to a crash that was caused by this (probably in the US, as they seem to like to sue car manufacturers even when it isn't their fault).

JMO, others can have their own (opinions are like @**holes, every one has them).

I probably drive a dozen or so different DSG-equipped cars a week, and I've never had any dramas with them, besides the ones that were obviously faulty.

Remember, you're asking a computer to make electrical components move mechanical components to make the whole DSG experiance happen.

The latter half of your first paragraph pretty much sums the whole thing up, really.

Well, wel, well, I have also noticed an unusual shifting pattern on my 7 speed from 4th to 5th... I get the jerking feeling as explained in the letter from VAG.... just before it changes to 5th I get a quick jerk feeling, it continues to accelarate then changes about a second after the jerk..... hmmmmmmm......

Alright, I am gonna grab the keys and go for a drive as instructed.

If this is my last post, I suppose you could hazard a guess. Just kidding.

However, there have been about 3 occassions in the last year where i have had to rely on the good graces of the other car.

The question for me now is, what constitutes acceptable lag, and what is faulty, as described above? How do you tell, or do we just rely on the dealer implicitly here?

OK, went for a short drive just to check lag.
Seems two things are going on.
(I am a bit sad, havent used launch or sport mode, so we are not talking peak performance, but I would like to match the '86 2.4L Corona off the lights).
I am aware that if you plant it straight away it takes a while, but will still pick up and within seconds be going well. Sometimes, but couldn't replicate it just now, the thing dies usually mid-intersection and the only remedy is to totally take your foot off and start again.
So we tend to just not rely on a quick getaway. Is this what we are all talking about? If so, the next car will be manual.

Thats sounds like a dsg fault to me. I dont have any issues with mine whatsoever (35,000km done now). In fact there arent many cars which match me off the mark at all.

Ive learnt to "caress" i.e back off the throttle on initial take off as well, but still get the odd hairy situation as per above.
