  • VW Golf MK V TDi Pacific MY2009 DSG

    Hi people,

Received a letter today in the mail. * Urgent Safety Recall *
    Service Campaign 37E8

Looks like I am off to the dealership very soon with my VW Golf Mk V.
The letter I received is just about the same as for the Audi recall notice
    as below.

    Any thoughts?

    Regards,
    NiekSavio

Audi—2009MY Audi A3 (8P) and TT (8J) Model vehicles—Software update of gearbox control unit
    PRA number: 2009/11172
    Date created: 23rd October 2009
    Product information
    Product description
2009MY Audi A3 (8P) and TT (8J) Model vehicles fitted with 6 Speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).
    Identifying features
    Campaign number: 37E5
    Target number: 420
    What are the hazards?
    Vehicle malfunction
    What are the defects?
There is a possibility that the control unit in the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) can cause a false temperature signal indicating that the clutch is overloaded. If this should happen, the control unit will open the clutch in order to protect the gearbox. As a consequence, the clutch protection function is activated, resulting in flashing gear-change indicator, uneven transmission of power, reduced engine torque and release of clutch.
    Where the product was sold
    National
    Supplier
Audi AG Germany and Audi Australia Pty Ltd
    What should consumers do?
Audi Australia Pty Ltd will write to owners of all affected vehicles

It is bad that it needs fixing, but good that they are (finally) doing something about it. Interesting that it is an "Urgent Safety Recall", not the usual low-key VW "Campaign".

This issue has been known about for quite a while now, there has been a lot of adverse publicity in the US about VW/Audi cars with DSGs suddenly losing power/drive and leaving drivers in potentially very dangerous situations.

In a few years when they iron most of the bugs out these new-fangled DSG thingos might actually be worth paying extra for (just to get in first before all the DSG aplogists get on the case)

Do you know what month your car was built? Mine's an October 2008 build MY09 and I didn't receive a letter and I called me dealer to check and they said my car isn't affected by the recall.

MY09. Can you tell me where to find built date plate on the vehicle?

My previous MK III has a built date plate in engine compartment.
I looked all over my engine and the paper work but can not spot a built date?
        Good question.

BTW, if you were affected, I am pretty sure you would have received a letter by now. In the end it ended up being a false alarm in my case. VW just wanted to make sure that my vehicle wasn't affected. They did a software check but nothing was replaced according to the paperwork.

Yup, it's in the boot under the carpet to the left of the spare tyre.

If VW say I'm not affected then I'm not worried, I was just curious as to what month yours was built if it was affected. From memory the MY09 Pacific would have only been built between July-ish and October 2008 because they stopped building the Mark 5s in October.

Note - this campaign is also affecting Passats - I had my R36 recalled, and yes, it is a software change, so no hardware involved.
