Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Calling all Mk5 GTI drivers with Denvers

When you bought your car, did it pull to the left?

As some of you may know, I swapped with a mate the other day with a mate and I now have Denvers on my MY08 Jetta. The other day when I got the new tyres they did the alignment and it now pulls to the left. I went back to the place today and they say that it's nothing they can do as it's the way the Castors are set up. I went on to explain that both with my stock Atlantas and my after market 18s I didn't have the problem but they didn't budge at the fact that it's "the way the car was made".

    Any thoughts?

I believe the GTI was set up with a negative camber setting of half a degree so that may be causing your uneven pull.
Not 100% sure on this however, JMAC may be able to help with the issue.

    Edit:
    Just found this http://www.mkv-gti.net/wiki/index.php?title=Suspension
Second heading form the bottom outlines the camber, toe and caster specs for the MK5 GTI.

Ok thanks, I'll check it out and if I need to I'll call Jimmy.

Just find it hard to believe that I never had a problem with my Atlantas or 18 Lavinhards, then all of a sudden I got this problem.

Would the specs be the same even though I have a Jetta?

Sorry I may have worded it wrong - if I let the wheel go it doesn't actually pull to the left, if the steering wheel is physically straight the wheel point to the left a little..

If they are OEM wheels then they would probably be designed for the GTI setup.
Since the Jetta shouldn't have the same setup as the GTI, it could explain why the wheels are "pointing to the left"
It could also explain why you didn't have a problem with the other aftermarke twheels as they wouldn't be setup for specifically for the GTI.

You could probably resolve the issue by getting replica Denver's.

            lol.

This is adjustable, they must have ****ed it up when they did the alignment. Happened to me once. Wheel was WAY out. Wheels have nothing to do with it.

The wheels will work fine on the Jetta sounds more like the alignment has been screwed up.

Buying cheap replicas isn't going to fix the problem.

+1, take it back to the aligners - or someone decent form a change (but will cost you extra) - and get it fixed by them gratis.

It is most likely an issue with the alignment, however he did say that it was set up like that so i was giving an alternative.

Best bet is to get another wheel alignment and see how that goes, if it is still out, then it could be the GTI specific wheels.

Many, but most give the conclusion the aligners is talking kwap.

                        A) Just so we have this right, your saying that when you take your hands off the steering wheel on a non-cambered road the car steers straight but the steering wheel is off-centre?

                        OR

                        B) When you take your hand off the steering wheel it drifts (left or right)...

                        A) is a simple adjustment that any 4th year apprentice should know how to do. you need to screw one tie rod in & the other out an equal amount. It isn't hard or time consuming.

                        B) is more difficult. Could be tyre runout (swap tyres side-to-side to check or it might be not enough camber difference L to R. Also Castor is adjustable via the (what I call) chassis plate thingy. Not many wheel aligners are willing to touch this as it's like a factory setting.

My guess would be that if it was drifting with the new tyres before they touched the alignment, it is a tyre runout issue.

edit: GTI specific wheels = fiddle-faddle

I would love to but I don't want a defamation charge knocking on my door.

I can say that I'll definitely be going somewhere to get it checked, and if it can be fixed, this place can be expecting the receipt for it.
