You can get Continental Sports contact 2 tyres fitted For $280.00 each at wide tread tyres in melbourne. l know that there not cheap tyres but they handle far better than most tyres on the vw:
option1garage.com.au has all the kumhos for great prices,
ku31's in 235/45/17 were about 130ea
ku36's (semi slicks) in 235/45/17 were 160ish each.
they deliver for about 25$/pair to anywhere in aus, and then you need to get them fitted as well, but if your in bris its the cheapest set of rubber going around. The semis are great for the mountains and spirited driving, but the 31's have a high wear rating while still being somewhat grippy

There's a massive price difference between 235 and 225. 235's are MUCH cheaper because there are more cars that use them (ie. Falcons and Commodores).
and 235's fit fine, even when lowered... and they even correct your speedo so your actually going the speed that that speedo says you are.
Wether they are 225 or 235 dosnt make a difference to how the speedo reads, its the profile( ie:35, 40, 45...) and the relation to the wheel size that affects the speedo reading.
"If can't get behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them..."
This is the way I understand it, maybe I understand wrong? Assuming a 40 profile tyre: 40% of 225 = 90mm, 40% of 235 = 94mm. Therefore the same size wheel with the wider tyre but same profile would be 8mm larger in diameter with the tyre fitted, thus affecting the speedo reading. Wouldn't it?

235/45/17
Overall Diameter: 643.12 mm
Sidewall Height: 105.66 mm
Radius: 321.56 mm
Circumference: 2020.3 mm

I was told by several tyre dealers I shouldn't place 235s on the standard GTI 7" alloys, because they could come loose on sudden and/or heavy turning maneuvers.
i bought ku31 kumhos from option1 for $130, for 225/45/17. But the earlier post regarding Widetread place charging $280 for SC2's fitted seems pretty good.
