My MkV GTI Tyre Shopping Price Experience

Well, after 65,000kms on the original CS2s, (2 with around 5,000kms to go), I decided to shop around for tyres... rotated every 15,000kms and done 1 Wheel alignment once for the life of the tyres.. so not bad for wear.
Anyway, I thought those in Melbourne might be interested in the tyre pricing i got, so I'll just list them.

All prices include balance and fitting for a 225/45 17 profile.

Dunlop LM702 (91W) $200
Dunlop 3000A (91V) - illegal for GTI - $278
Dunlop Sport Max TT - $370
Bridgestone Potenza RE001 - Extra Load version (94W) - $220 CASH.
Continental CS3 - $355
Michelin PP2 - $326
Yokohama C Drives - $250
Yokoham Advan Sports - $290
Pirelli PZero Nero - $250
Goodyear Excellence - $315


When getting the Potenza RE001, even though they are the same sizes and spec, try to get the Japanese made one or the Extra Load one (94W) made in Australia, as it seems they have stiffer sidewalls.

I bought some Bridgestone Adrenalin's for a not bad price from Bob Jane's.

Why are the Dunlop 3000A's illegal?

That's 65,000 and then needing all 4 replaced (not just 2).

The 3000A are illegal to place on because they have a lower speed rating than the specifications (W is the minimum for the GTI), while the 3000As are a V rated tyre.

For the GTI, you either need W or Y rated tyres.

Yokohama do the A.Drive R1 in a 94W so personally, I wouldn't be spending $250 a corner on C Drives, which are particularly ordinary for that money. That's the same as what you were quoted for the P Zero Nero, so it's no contest at that price point.

I'm currently on P Zero Neros, but recommend the A.Drive R1s highly, so perhaps that's something for you to investigate? I think they'd offer you far better value and performance than either offering from Bridgestone or Continental, and would prove far better than the C Drives.

yeah, Yoko's are currently expensive at the moment... rang a few places about the Yokos, and I can't find a place that sells them competitively.

Ended up getting the Potenza RE001 because it was in stock, one of the cheaper tyres and a lot of great reviews on them.

I was leaning towards the PZero Neros because its one of their top of the range tyres (in comparison to the RE001 which is supposively a watered down version of their RE040/55), but heard they get very noisy later on in their life.

I have driven 35,000kms on my CS2s and expect around the same distance you have travelled. Good to see another GTI driver that realises the car is a VW and not a ferrari ... and drives it accordingly.

The Golf GTI is a well balanced car. As long it's launched properly (just before losing traction), the tyres should last a while... but it also depends on the roads you take as well.. I drive from the city to Sth East suburbs most of the time - in traffic.

Thanks for the initial post, as I too am up for tyres and this is gold!

I was well into my fronts at 12k, so much so I swore to leave ESP on, and rotated them. Now at 45k I have two illegal, and two about a mm off. Given how I treat the tyres, you could indeed take it easy and get 50k plus out of them, so the 60k comment isn't out of reach in my estimate.

I take the windiest roads I can to and from work...adds about 10km to the trip sometimes, but its like meditation!
