Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk 6 GTI XDL for Mk 5 GTI????

Just been reading the Wheels supplement on the new Mk 6 GTI. It explains the new XDL (Electronic Diff Lock) function as a software tweak to the existing ESP program. This got me thinking. Could this software tweak be applied to my Mk 5 GTI thus giving it an XDL capability?

Does anyone know if this is being worked on or available? I would certainly upset VW.

I thought about that when it was explained on the Academy day.

I reckon there is some engineering required to make it work, and won't be simple to do - however there are surely people out there if this is possible that will nut it out.

It Is possible to do it, but by the time you replace all your wiring, engine ecu's, (engine as well), ESP computer, I'm sure the bill will far exceed the cost of a new GTI .

Unfortunately its all next generation stuff.

Another option is to install a clutch type LSD & have a real diff for about 4-6k - not quite the same as a new GTI, but much more effective.

The boggo MK6 TSI has the XDL (Electronic Diff Lock) as well. So not exclusive to the GTI.

Does this mod mean traction control/ESP is out the window, or will it still work?

Wow, the info to date says its a software upgrade to the ESP. How do you arrive at a new engine too? In fact, can anyone explain how the ESP works as I was under the impression it was not contoled from the ECU but had its own sensors and feedbacck into the ECU.

            Thanks.

MK5's run ME9 engine management tied in with ESP & Particularly the ABS unit (controls most of the ESP) - The MKVI is version 70 - Mark V is version 60.

The MKVI runs ME17.5 engine management that talks to the new ABS controller.

Hell, even the tyre pressure monitors (rolling diameter) talks a lot faster on the MKVI.

There is not much shared in that part of the electrical system.

Oh, back to the start - you would need the new ABS system to run XDL, therefore the new engine management, therefore the new engine

Half your luck - Green with envy. No doubt it will be a beast once you have finished tinkering with it.

Drifting the thread & sorry to be a pedant, but I am confused with versions and marks. - Guy don't you mean the Mark6 has the newer MK60EC1 whereas the Mark 5 has the older MK60 ABS unit. Just that MK60 is ABS/ESP and MK70 is only ABS. So bigger number is less sophisticated in this regard. Or am I confusing MKs with Versions?
                    Cheers Logger.

Just Talking about the Teves Head unit - The MKVI uses the G70 unit (or the ones I have had here do) and our MKV's use the G60 unit. Ultimately this unit (ABS controller) is what is doing the ESP & XDL duties.

Even going from your numbers (software controllers?) - they are different versions!

I get it now. I was confusing the version of the ABS unit itself with the software controller therein. Thanks for the explanation.
