Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

So you will loose all your coolant to "check the pump" which i have found 90% are cracked between the shaft and impellar, its a known issue, so its removed why not spend an extra $90 and fit one with a metal impellar, you have removed the 3 bolts to check it and loose all your coolant, i dont get it mate sorry, only trying to help, i do this for a living

I know where you're coming from, I do it for a living, too. Unfortunately, I'm not the one that pays the bill. As for the coolant loss, it's minimal, and is re-used. Probably only adds 15mins to the job.

If it were up to me, I'd be putting a water pump in when the timing belt is replaced. But, I can't play by my rules (yet). Hell, I couldn't even get VW to cover a water pump in a Tiguan that cooked itself.

Thats right, but the water pump is in the heart of the engine, you lose loads of coolant. i wouldnt reuse either at the minimum cost to replenish anyway, not to worry, when you play by your rules itll change
Sad story about the Tig too, that sux.
          Cheers

the oil is like $50 per litre and you need 5 litres.
then there is the replacing of a lot of filters as well
The oil is under $160 retail for the six litres required (could be five litres without the mechatronics but allow six).

The transmission filter is under $65 retail.

The transmission filter seal is under $4 retail.

Labour is 2 hours so around $220.

You should pay between $400 and $500 for the dsg service.

Some details of the bits used are here (plus some extra bits)

Had my 60000km service done on a TDI DSG Jetta about 3 months ago. $960 for complete service including DSG oil change. Tamworth dealer.

We're running off 4 different VW-supplied service schedules right now. Not a lot seems to line up! Personally, I stick with what the book says, but the upper management prefers other methods. I seriously can't win

I was told around $900 from my local VW service centre for the 60k service. They do a flush and filters on the DSG. It's the 120K service that is going to empty the bank account!!

Oh yeah if you have a PD 2.0 or 1.9 PD then its timing belt , guides and the tensioners and without doubt the water pump ( 3 extra bolts to remove), if you are in that far its a no brainer. Coupled with the DSG itll be on its second filter and oil service too.

I lusted after a GT TDI - great torque, great mileage with DSG all round a near GTI (Sigh) however small euro diesel engines not that reliable when old and expensive to fix, turbochargers commonly fail early and never last the life of the engine. and DSG, well I can wear the extra charges service over a manual but reliability??? Mechatronix Module - all you DSG fans come on I dare you to quote one less than in the thousands. Dual clutch replacement - I shudder.

VW I love the ride performance style etc.... really, really do (also have a thing for MINI) but they do not last
I have a car which was not particularly reliable but very satisfying and simple, a MK1 GTI which one day I will put back on the road,
now driving a MX5 (dont laugh, third most reliable car of the decade)
