So theoretically speaking of course, what steps should one take should one be considering such an exercise... cover rego plates and windscreen VIN? Does anybody actually do that, i.e. would one look like a complete tool for doing it LOL...

There's plenty of other reasons they could use...
If they only warrant original unmodified non persishable equipment, I think the only thing of mine that's covered will be the flap that opens up the boot.
But that was a decision I crossed about $35,000 worth of mods ago.....
All that aside, personally I think any company that voids warranties because of the very (and I mean VERY) few people who use them for "racing" puts themselves at odds with a lot more people than they're trying to attack. It's incredibly bad PR.
Going down the quarter mile once or twice a year is hardly racing.
It would be interesting to see what VW's position is on this. I know there's no way in a million years Ducati would reneg on my warranty because it saw a few hours of track time per year. Certainly the exotics over here (Ferrari/Lambo/Lotus/Masarati) etc have track days for their customers on a frequent basis.
when I bought my FPV, included in the purchase price was an advanced driver training day at AHG, where john bowe and his colleagues actively encouraged us to thrash our cars around the track for the day (in fact the instructors would jump in and show us how we werent doing it well enough!!)

hey guys, certainly in WA it is illegal to void a warranty based on a vehicle going to the drags.
As a consumer, we have the right to purchase an item (any item) that is fit for purpose, and manufacturers are unable to word warranty forms etc that void this protection.
VW (or any manufacturer) would have to prove that taking the car from 0 - ~180kmh in the fastest time possible (i.e. 1/4 mile) on the odd occasion has definitely caused the fault in question. Unless you are hammering the car consistently they would struggle to do this.
As it is an advertised performance car, you have the right to expect that taking it for an occassional fang, is the "purpose" of the car. If you dealer tries this on, you just need to push back very hard and you should be right.
Ultimately you may need to take them to consumer protection but in almost all cases, you would win and they would be required to repair the vehicle, however most customers either dont know this, or couldnt be stuffed.

It's a very grey area, but very much in favour of the manufacturer. If you do drag, and want to protect your warranty, consider what pics and vids you post in the very least!

Most hoons cover vin with duct tape or permanent marker when going down to races.... and you stop inside the front gates and take your plates off before anyone has a chance to take em down.
Just show em to the attendant when you sign in though.
If your going to the drags just have low expectations, the drag strip bears almost no relationship to a normal road as there is too much burnt rubber on it and sticky compounds... the axle tramp monster lives at motorplex...

But to keep it back on topic, yep next Wednesday might be on. Apparently the WRX club is having a big meet down there, so it might be up to the VW crowd to put them in their place!
