Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. Jetta suspension - a bit firm...

Nice cars Tofo & thanks for the input.

Seems like the wheel change is a popular choice, my only reason for questioning it is that I've driven a TDI with 18" charlestons and the ride wasn't as firm. Sure, there was a difference from my mates TDI at work which runs straight 16's but the 18's didn't feel too bad at all. This makes me question how much the 'sports suspension and, to a less degree, the 15mm lowered spring has contributed to the overall drive.

I'm in Melbourne so will chase up some suspension places for advice as I agree with what most people have said - change shocks normally means a firmer ride. However, if the standard shocks are of say average quality, they may not have the overall control to adjust themselves to the various road conditions etc. I had a brief drive of a GTI V golf a while back, granted on 17's, but I recall the ride being more controlled where as the jetta can quickly hit it stops (that's what it feels like).

Same can be said for the top of the range Honda Euro which absorbs bumps a lot better and also run 18s hence, my hesitation to solely blame the 1 inch upgrade in wheels here.

It's still under warranty, so I might even get VW to check it out, just to be sure. Based on reviews, I'm sure I'll be dismissed and they'll suggest it's the move from 17's to 18's despite the minimal differences in the sidewall numbers.

Quality is still quality, so I'll be keen to know what Koni can advise based on what I'm chasing or if anyone has done something similar here based on requirement. Thanks again - love the forum already!!

Wookiee, what about your springs? are they the same, sometimes you have to change them too, there are places where you can test the bouncing....

LOL, re the wheels....my wife probably won't let me sell them - she likes them too much.

The whole suspension is standard TFSI, so whatever they used from the factory is what it's got re the springs. The NRMA link in this thread probably summed it up best.

As it's the family car I just want it a bit plusher, like a euro and I can't see why it can't be done but I will need to do some homework or speak to anyone else who's gone down this path, suspension folk, etc. Even the standard $14 pedders test might be worthwhile though I doubt I would use their shocks based on past experience (they would recommend bilstein's anyway)...

I've got the same car (07 TFSI) and 18" rims (Charlestons). I actually don't find it that bad, yes its a little firm but have gotten used to it. Having said that, its not my daily driver ...

It's a family car too, and my 2.5yo son doesn't seem to mind it (in fact he screams "FASTER" from the back seat regularly .........).

Give it a bit of time

              17" Visions

I'm going to persist with the car, however, I did try to post an entry into the wanted section, but I have no privileges to do so as yet!!

I'd be interested in buying a set of 17" Vision alloy wheels or trading for the 18" Karthoum's I have. Any advice on how I can get this msg out there would be appreciated. Got to hate the newbie, lol...

You might try Bridgestone RE001's on the 17's- they have a relatively soft ride. Every little bit helps, I guess.

Will keep that in mind, thx. Any idea where the best place to look for the vw wheels like the Vision's might be (outside of a VW dealer, lol)?

                    eBay?

I saw a set of 16" Jetta rims on there recently; and I see there are a set of 18s up at present (but no use to you).

Yep, those 16's were a tempting bargain, however, i don't think i'd go that way...will keep eyes open!

Ok, I was in my friends 2008 XR6T last night and he's running 19" wheels. The ride was plush compared to my Jetta, so my hunch is likely to be correct, this is more a suspension set up issue than simply 18" wheels problem.

If anyone knows the suspension difference between the standard 2.0 jetta/TDI version compared to the TFSI in regards to part numbers for both the shocks (inserts) and springs (i know they are 15mm lower) then this might help. EG - if inserts are the same, but it's just the springs which differ then it could be an easier fix. Thanks...

guess it comes down to personal choice too when it comes to ride comfort.
I love the ride of my jetta with 18" charlestons.

Yeah, for sure. I do like the ride at higher speeds but would happily sacrifice that for a more forgiving ride at low to medium speeds. I'm reasonably confident if I put 17's on it the ride would remain similar so I'm going chat to the guys at Koni to see what they can do. I spoke to VW parts and they told me the Jetta comes in 3 different spec insert variations and two sets of springs. Apparently the sports ones are quite limited in its range when it comes to travel and i think they may even be stiffer than the GTI. Anyway, will drive it a bit more and see what gives first, my obsession for a more forgiving ride or reduction in care factor based on the fact my wife is fine with it, lol....
