'06 Gti. The problems are fairly common on this year, and '07s I believe - I know a couple of Gtis and a couple of R32 owners personally with the same problems plus more - never a serious engine problem though - really weird.Originally posted by AusScare View PostIs that a '94 VR6 or something? If not, then you picked a lemon, and if it were me I'd be getting rid of the car quick smart.
As I say. I love my car, and I intend to have it long enough for all of the components to be replaced.
It's part of the overall experience!
I strongly recommend the extended warranty - give Jaz a call to organise with the forum discount.

Selling Dealer (west of Sydney, east of Blacktown) service and support pre-sale: 8/10
Selling Dealer service and support post-sale: 1/10 Once they sold me the car they ran away at the 1st sign of a problem.
Local Dealer service and support post-sale: 10/10. Can't fault the Penrith crew - nothing but a great experience - fixed the stuff the selling dealer couldn't face up to.
Quality of interior: 8/10 Solid and practical, though some plastic knobs/panels like the recliner and the cover to the cup holders in the back falls off occasionally.
Quality of exterior: 8/10 I wish the headlights had more adjustment like high beam separate to the low.
Quality of mechanicals: 8/10 48k and going strong though oil usage is still there but erratic. 0-15k lots of oil then 15-30k no oil used, 30-45k some oil used.
Fun Factor: 10/10 just the best grunt!
Pride of Ownership: 10/10 everyone loves a golf but not all brave enough to take the plunge
Fuel economy: 9/10 every time I get at least 750km per tank
Aroma Therapy: Just love the smell of diesel...SPoddy

LEAVE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Originally posted by AusScare View Posthmm I guess. As a comparison, we own an 03 Subaru Forester X that has never had a warranty claim, same with our 07 Liberty. Thus why we're now buying an my10 WRX over the mk6 GTIs...
Kidding - I know you're a dubber at heart Tim.
Dealer service and support pre-sale: Dealer support - 10/10. The were great at communicating with me (being in Brisbane and them being on the Gold Coast). They offered to replace the windscreen on my Bora when it chipped at a much lower rate than O'Briens which made it hassle free for me when trading in as the chip happened the day before. The dealer who sold me the car also gave me a sales vehicle (new manual TDI Jetta) for my first service.
Dealer service and support post-sale: 10/10. They've always offered me the best service and actually treat me the way a customer should be treated. Hence why I don't mind driving the 70 odd km to take my car there. They understand that fact and that I'm in Brisbane and always do as much as they can to help me. I would recommend anyone to Southport VW anyday.
Quality of interior: 7/10. Mk5 ownership means many rattles. But overall I've had nothing break (that hasn't been replaced under warranty) and everything feels solid.
Quality of exterior: 10/10. No issues there yet.
Quality of mechanicals: 9/10. No issues other than a sometimes clunky DSG. But that can hardly be classed as an "issue".
Fun Factor: 6/10. I have a TDI, I didn't expect too much. Although it's better now that it's been flash-tuned.. Nevertheless, it still puts a smile on my face
Pride of Ownership: 10/10. I'm absolutely proud of my car and the minor mods I've done to it. It's a TDI, no one else has done that to a TDI Jetta that I know/seen of so I'm damn well proud of it.
Fuel economy: 8/10. Not as good as I'd hoped but still impressive!! I've only once fallen under the 5/100km mark and even today with about 250km of highway driving, it wouldn't go under 6.2. (We may have been booting it a little on the way back from Warwick though

You know, I had a Nissan 200sx S15 before this and I sold it at 120k's because it was up for tyres and brakes! I had spent nothing on it previously - you'll likely get the same kind of reliability out of a Subaru. (If I'm honest I had to change the oil every 5k's rather than 15 in my GTi.)Originally posted by AusScare View Posthmm I guess. As Maca said, the rattles are common in a Gti, and I reckon most of the bad stuff has been ironed out in the later models, and all of the component failures have been fixed under warranty.Last edited by pangy; 04-10-2009, 09:52 PM.

That is a good comparison, the Subis are at a lower price point than comparable VWs and yet offer similar features. Being (mainly) flat fours they are probably almost more VW than much of the Volksy rangeOriginally posted by AusScare View Posthmm I guess. Our 2002 2ltr GT Forester has not been totally problem free, it was back to the dealer for a replacement flywheel/clutch assembly inside the warranty period, however even that was just a case of harmonics creating a disconcerting noise on deceleration - nothing that actually broke. Apart from that it had its front CV done under warranty at about 70ks after the boot perished. Altogether acceptable for a car that gets heavy use, and has crossed many a flooded creek! Its still running the original 6 stacker stereo, its cabin rattles are far less than our R32 and mechanically it has never missed a beat. Oh yeah, we did need to replace the battery after 5 years amd a few headlight bulbs..
The strange thing here is that Subaru and VW dealerships are owned by the same company, yet the service experience IMO from Subaru is immeasurably better.
The ownership experience for our Foz has been a 9/10 - thoroughly recommended!MY07 R32, black, DSG, 3dr, sunroof
