Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It's all over the place. I've had a lengthy discussion with my service manager at work about this. We've been doing them at 120,000klms, unless the service book or ELSA state otherwise. Apparently VW is releasing a correct service schedule for dealers soon.

Also worth noting is to make sure the belt is replaced as a kit. Ok, it's more expensive, but at least you'll get the tensioner and idler pulleys replaced at the same time.

As for water pumps, yeah, definately get them inspected. Most technicians will drop the coolant out to simplify the job, and the water pump is usually only held in with three bolts, anyways.

If it's anything like their lubrication chart, it will only go back as far as the mid '90s. I'm hoping I can get hold of a PDF version of it to share.

              Hi guys,

I have a 05 2.0 Tdi on 90k, emailed different places (burwin & 4 other places) only burwin & 1 mechanic said now the timing belt is due.

Double check the owner manual, it saids 120k but without telling how many yrs tho.

2 Yes Vs 4 No(inc. manual) so I think I don't have to worry it now....but if there is any update since the last post (@ Feb 2010) please me know!

BTW, can anyone recommend a good service center in Melbourne(eastern suburbs)? I got quote from few other places they generally around $300ish, which is way cheaper than dealer, however I'd like to know a service center with good reputation & know about VW cars too, thx!!

Not sure whether the tdi is different, but I'm just about the have the timing belt replaced on my GTI. My dealer said that it should be strictly replaced every 120k or 4 years, whatever comes first because the rubber belts perish and if they snap it's big trouble. If yours is an '05 and you haven't had the belt replaced yet, then I think I would consider very carefully about doing it (and the water pump while they're at it as they're all accessable together).

I believe VWA have changed their requirements now to each 4 years or 60,000kms.

it should be said that be aware with buying your own parts esp from the us. Most workshops will refuse to fit your parts because if things go south then who gets the blame? if you buy the wrong parts then the mechanic finds out when its in peices, or the part fails or its questionable as to weather its incorrect fitting or not. Best to just leave 100% responsibility with the mechanic.

oh and vw now claim australian climate and coolant are causing premature wear on water pumps and therefor are saying 60k or 4 years, i don't beleive its necessary

Maybe we should blame climate change?! LOL!
