  • Project Pirelli (Lots of Pictures and Text)

    Hi Everyone.

It's been a little while since I was online, but I've now finished the majority of the modifications to the Pirelli and thought I'd drop you all a thread to show you how the car is going.

The idea of this thread is to document the car as it stands, through its genesis back in November 2008 until Today and maybe beyond!

The story began on November the 2nd, 2008. I'd owned a MkV Golf before, a basic 1.6 litre trendline, which I bought in March 2005 - shortly after they were released in Australia.

Although quite sedate in the performance department, it was a wonderful car. Both myself and the wife loved it dearly, but it unfortunately had to go in late 2007 when our family grew beyond the size of the golf. It was sad to see it go, but there was no other choice at the time. We bought a huge Mazda CX9 which was brilliant for what we needed - but it wasn't a golf (I'm sure you guys all know what I'm talking about).

Fast forward to Mid October 2008. I heard a rumour a new "Pirelli" edition Mk5 was coming out similar to the spec of the amazing Golf Edition 30 that the Brits had a year earlier. I also heard it was the very last of the Mk5 GTI's before the new MK6 was released in Early 09.

I did a bit of surfing and came across the pictures of the Pirelli. Now I know the yellow isn't for everybody, but I was absolutely blown away with pictures as soon as I saw them. Not only that, but the great list of hardware on the Pirelli (Namely the K04 Turbo, the strengthened engine and the bodywork) made it highly tempting. A few days later on the 2nd of November, I went into my local VW dealer. I'd decided I wanted one and was going to order one on the spot.

I wanted a Yellow, 4 door, and I wanted it loaded with all the major extras available. Satellite Navigation, Bi-Xenon's and Rear Parking Sensors. I opted out for bluetooth - as I hate mobile phones. Call me strange, but I reckon they're the curse of modern society..

Anyway, only 3 yellow ones coming into WA I'm told. 2 already ordered (this was only days after it's press release)... We might be able to get you the last one, and by chance it has all the fruit you want on it. A couple of anxious days later, I find out the car is mine... I also find out, to my dismay, that the car hadn't even been built yet - and delivery is expected in about 14 weeks (yeah, 3.5 months).

Not to be deterred, I ordered the car. All excited, I forgot about it for a few weeks, then I cracked up google to find out what people were doing with their Mk5s...

Then like a moth to a flame, I came across the Harding Performance website and all the mods they had available for the Mk5.... A few emails later, the seeds had been planted, and even before I'd received the car - the idea of "Project Pirelli" came into being. A couple of emails later to the guys at hardings, I'd decided I was going with the APR kit. The main reason was great local backup, relative good pricing compared to others, plus they had pretty much everything I wanted to buy all available together.

Fast forward to delivery day. The car ended up coming a little earlier, early February 09. By then I'd already had a plan set out and was ready to put it into action!

The plan was to upgrade the car in a series of phases. I'd also set myself a criteria for making any decisions on the direction of the project. I wanted to be very precise and strict with my goals, as I've seen too many projects go off the rails when a goal wasn't defined from the outset.

The criteria for the upgrade was:

    a) The mods had to be tasteful, and keep the car looking conservative and relatively original. Of course the car could be made to look better, but not at the cost of taste or performance. For those of you who know me, you'll know I hate car bling. Performance yet no "fast and furious" styling.

    b) All of the parts had to be arguably best of breed. No cheap second-rate components, and only the best of each type of component. The components had to work together, look like they belong together, and perform at the top of their class.

    c) Nothing goes on the car unless it adds performance.

    d) No gimmicky mods, or mods that added questionable performance gains were to be considered.

    e) The car was only to be worked on by consummate professionals with the utmost of care.

    f) Time was expendable - it doesn't matter how long it takes to get something in, or get something done - so long as it added to the quality of the car. Money was also expendable. If it meant it took longer to get the money together rather than putting on second-choice or inferior parts - then so be it. No compromises.

So I picked up the car early February, and this is what she looked like.

Other than the open vents near the front foglights, the car is completely stock standard.

It was now ready for phase 1.

    Phase 1

With only 600ks on the clock, the car went into Quattro Motors to have the APR tune installed. The car was out within a couple of hours, and I honestly couldn't believe what I was feeling.

The standard car is already a beast - but with the tune it becomes quite savage. Sure it has considerable turbo lag, but the tune fully opens up the potential of the K04. The exhaust note changed, with noticable 'pops' coming out of the rear during gear shifts. The car was powerful, yet under control before the tune. After the tune, the increase in power pushes the FWD very close to its limit.

The additional power was like a drug, and it only fortified my decision to progress with the project.

For anybody with a Pirelli - you have to do this basic mod. Even if you don't want to go onto anything else, this should be the very minimum.

Within a few days, I'd confirmed with all the suppliers involved in the project to start ordering the respective parts.

    Phase 2

The next part of the project was to install the APR exhaust and 328mm brembo brakes.

I'd originally wanted to buy the larger brakes, but they simply wouldn't fit under the standard Pirelli wheels. The decision was made to put on slotted, rather than drilled rotors - and they were ordered as a package along with the full exhaust. These were installed on the 12th of March.

The standard brakes are tiny compared to the huge brembos.

Not only are the brembos bigger and more powerful, they are considerably lighter than the OEM brakes. This reduction in rolling resistance can only assist in greater acceleration and braking.

Next, on with the APR full exhaust system. This thing's a monster.

Leaving the store was quite a shock. The noise coming out the the exhaust was just AMAZING. The first few blasts had me laughing so hard I almost drove into the back of a Magna. Driving like a grandpa it's very little different from the normal exhaust - but when it's angry, people will know about it from miles around.

The car was remapped, and the performance increase, although not as noticable as the tune, was up quite considerably. This was also likely due to the reduction in sprung weight on the front wheels....

    Phase 3 -

Within days of the brakes/exhaust, the KW Coilovers went in. I opted for V3s to get the ultimate in adjustability - although KWs aren't necessarily as easy to adjust as other coilovers.

After some initial rubbing, the guys from Wheels World got it dialled in just right. The car was/is setup for a fairly firm, yet comfortable ride. The wheel arches need to be rolled to drop the car any further, but as this wouldn't add much to the performance of the car I opted to keep them as setup by K&W/Wheels World. This was about 15mm under Pirelli Stock height, or about 40mm under standard GTI ride height.

Out on the track I had a blast. The standard tyres are quite acceptable, so I ultimately opted to keep them on rather than upgrade later to R Specs.

    Phase 4

Although not absolutely necessary, I had the APR High Pressure Fuel Pump and the upgraded Intercooler installed. The Fuel Pump to iron out any possible wrinkles in fuelling, and the upgraded IC to ensure heat soak was reduced as far as possible.

I'd consider these two mods as providing the least overall gains, but I guess it did strengthen the overall platform for anything that may come later....

And yes, the car was remapped... Again....

    Phase 5

Now it was time to order some wheels..

After much soul searching, I decided on a set of Yokohama Advan RZs. Damned expensive, but they offered what I wanted. Gorgeous looks, and extreme light weight. Rather than going with larger wheels, I stuck with 18x8s to get the best possible weight/performance. These were going to be a long wait.... First 2 months, then 3.....

After 5 months (yes 5 months) they were installed early this week.

What can I say... Wow... They look great, and the car chalked up another few notches in the acceleration and braking department. It's truly brutal now (but there's always room for more!)....

A picture tells a thousand words.... Just look at those centrehubs....

So, this morning after 6+ months of work I decided it would be an idea to get the car dynoed....

Things however, didn't go to plan. The DSG made it a real problem getting any decent runs. Whenever you'd get into a run, the car would either change up - or down. The best I saw on the Dyno was 260HP, but that was at only around 4000RPM well before the real story on this car starts....

*sigh*... I guess I'll have to talk with the APR guys as to what to do.. Until then, the horsepower on this car is going to remain a mystery. I do suspect however, somewhere in the vicinity of 200-220 kws (300 horsepower?) at the wheels would be about right.

    So what's next?

To be truthful I don't know. The car looks and sounds just fantastic, and it goes like a demon. Any more horsepower might be too much for the little FWD and it might just ruin the almost perfect dynamics of the car...

I now have a shed full of Pirelli parts.. Exhaust, brakes, wheels, fuel pump, suspension.... I guess everything that makes a pirelli a pirelli!

I'll be hanging onto all this kit as spares - particularly the wheels as they would be very tough to replace... So for now, in the boxes with you...

I guess it's to be continued guys...... The next area to look at might be weight savings... See what I can find without ruining the fit and finish and overall beauty.

300 horses and she looks almost as standard as the day she was born.

I anticipate 0-100km/h times will be around 5.0-5.3 seconds, and the standard quarter mile in the high 12's to low 13's.. I'll know in a few months when we put this weather behind us and the drags open up again for summer.

        nice write up dude.

ive just had my relli intaked, flo pumped, and GIAC awesomeness tuned and a slabs going your way if you can get your relli anywhere close to a flat 5 for a 0-100 on street rubber, running street tyre psi and on a (private ) street.

my relli makes a mockey of the LC and even babying it off the line with DSG is impossible!!

i think there was a special way to dyno the DSG. I think bazzle has it on his thread, ill find it.

Isnt it just a matter of selecting the gear in sport mode and not pushing the pedal all the way down so far as to click the kickdown button?

Awesome writeup Kryten 2001. I'm sure your ride will blast my R32 away, and with my NA engine, there's not much improvement I can really do aside from going all out and getting either a supercharger or turbo fitted. That's going to be a huge modification which involves major engine modification which firstly I'm not too keen on, and secondly, my bank won't be too keen on either

One suggestion to your mods so far, with all the extra horsepower and handling enhancements especially with braking and suspension, do you think a front and rear stress bar would help your track days? As this should improve chassis rigidity and precision on steering especially when you're tipping in. Just a suggestion here.

Good luck with your next phase and don't forget to let us know how many hp or Kw you get out of your little puppy...

By the way, do you have two Pirellis as the number plates are different in your post.

Thats an inspiration for potential car modders right there. If i had the coin no doubt i would consider a software flash. Your car is an outright beast, and those rims were hell worth the wait. I was under the impression there couldnt be anything superceding the super/ultraleggeras on our Vw's.

Great update Kryten! I'd like to know where you had the dyno done too, there has been talk of a WA dyno day for ages but it's never happened.

I noticed the different plates as well but I suspect Photoshop trickery to hide your true identity

How's the full APR Exhaust? I'm looking to buy either a TBE or DP for my Pirelli also but I'm scared of the TBE being a bit too loud even if there are minimal gains over the DP, the last thing I want is going on a 100km highway drive with the exhaust blaring over my music or just even my thoughts!

Yep. To be honest I'm really not sure what to expect. I only know it'll be in the 5's somewhere....

I did get a 5.8 using Dynolicious before the exhaust, IC, Fuel Pump and lightweight wheels went on.. So I'd be a bit disappointed if it doesn't break 5.5. It's certainly down to technique though, as you need to get that boost on as early as possible with these cars.

I had it done by a mob called "Pro Auto". The Dyno was great, and the service was fantastic. I don't think they were entirely "euro friendly" though. Lots of mutterings about "Effing Germans" and "Bloody FWDs"....

Very nice setup though and the service was great. I can enquire about a Dyno day if you guys like????

I took some very good advice in the handling department, and decided to leave the KW's as the only change in that area. From my understanding, a certain (although not a great deal) of bodyroll is fine. It gives the tyres their best opportunity to do their job. Frankly, I had this thing going around corners at AHG at the limit for what I could handle and I wasn't left wanting any more grip or firmness in the suspension dept. For all the postering, GTI's aren't really a track car - although they do a pretty good job at it.

Mate the APR exhaust is spot on. I'm not kidding when I say unless you're giving it a bootful - you won't really notice much difference. There is certainly NO drone whatsoever at high speeds (anything under 150 anyway). It only comes on song when you really put the foot in. Great setup. Obnoxious as hell when you want it to be, otherwise it's a pussycat.

Yeah I dunno hey. Personally I don't really like the look of them. They look too tacky (but that's just me) - plus I've read a few bad reports about them from place to place... I reckon if I was going to go CAI, I'd probably go with the K&N engine-bay jobbie. I've seen some brilliant looking powdercoated intakes, but nothing that allows you to keep the engine cover on..

To be honest, a few extra KW isn't really worth it when you're already pushing out 220-240. If I was after more horses (which I'm not saying I'm not) then I think I'd probably go with the bad boy garrett turbo from APR. 285 KW (or more depending on what fuel you're using). I just dunno.. As it drives now, and even after all these months of owning it, it still shocks the bejeezus out of me up to 100ks...

I gotta say it's tempting though. I'm already in for serious dosh on this car (you really don't wanna ask) - so an extra $10k to extract the next monster step up in power is certainly attractive...

Maybe I should rub up the APR guys in the right way, it's practically an APR poster child as it is.

                          Cheers guys.
