ps, i managed to get my money back on the fine too.
people just need to be aware that if the cop is having a bad day, they can and will fine you for their incorrect use.

    Jason.
Unlike speeding though, at a flick of a switch they can't prove that you were using them..

          True.

that's why i paid the fine, but included a letter of explanation.
about 6 weeks later, i got a refund cheque and a statement that the refund didn't mean that i was in the right.

You can legally use foglights in fog & other inclemant weather (heavy rain, etc). The interpretation of inclemant weather is somewhat subjective.

I'm not a technical person but can you change the globe in the fog lights so that they are not bright and use that as daytime running lights?

i don't see why not, but you would likely trigger a bulb out warning on the dash, as bulbs that are not as bright, would not draw as much current.

So because the cops don't seem to care (ie they have more pressing issues to deal with) that makes it ok to annoy oncoming traffic with your lights?

It's illegal to use them for a reason not because they don't want you to look "cool" with your "look at me" foglights.

I'm another "cool", "look at me" fog lights on in the day time wanker...For the main reason that after being taken out twice at roundabouts by bigger cars...I want to be seen. So to me, the "annoyance" is warranted. Who out there actually focuses on lights at night to the point that it acually hurts your eyes?? If you answer yes, you must look at the sun with Binoculars for fun...Hahahahah...
Seriuosly though, I have been pulled over once for it in the Blue mountains, and got warned, and got warned at an RBT in Albury. In Vic, NT, SA, and QLD i have never had any dramas with it. At the end of the day, it comes down to the discretion of the Police officer. I have been let off more times then I have been fined, as I am polite and courtious, and they are only doing their job, plus I remember the pepper grinder action...

i got a warning the other night coming home. was around midnight and had been driving down some back roads with my high beams on so i usually add my fogs to improve the lighting at the front of the car.... came into a built up area and turned off my high beams and forgot my fogs. pulled up at a breathaliser stop and was asked by the copper to turn off my fog lights and got warned that it was a $180 fine in vic for using them in anything but foggy conditions.

i used to do it for this reason also... a notoriously bad roundabout near my house that people used to get cleaned up at on a regular basis. now i just use my headlights and extreme caution as people still dont seem to know what a give way sign means.

IIRC you can change the output level via Vagcom/VCDS.

But as their intended purpose is as a foglight you will most likely still receive a ticket as well as annoy other drivers especially when the road is wet.

Why not just use the headlights as DRL's as this is not illegal and won't annoy other road users?

whats so annoying about the fogs? how can they be more annoying than the headlights? they're not even close to blinding and they're well out of eye line.. Its the 4wds pulling trailers or not and the fools with aftermarket HID's and the ****heads that drive around with their high beams on. Fogs help see roos by the roadside bout to jump out and smash your car too..
