  • Using my fog lights? GTI Pirelli

Hello, long time reader, first time poster. Just wondering on my GTI Pirelli how do I turn on the fog lights (lights in the front bar), I've tried every possibility in the car and had a quick read of the manual and couldn't find anything? Am I just getting old and not knowing or is there some secret code I need to work out?

    Thanks

Hey and welcome to the forum! Good to see another Queenslander on here

To activate your front fog lights; you'll need to have the light switch on either "parking lights" or "main beam" and pull it out one notch (2 to activate the rear fog as well). They won't work while on auto.

Ps. We don't need another war on whether or not they're illegal to use, and this thread will be locked if one starts

Wouldn't it just be pull the headlight switch forward one click? Don't have a Mk V but I guess it's the same, although you might need to have the parkers or headlights turned on manually rather than auto-on in order to pull the switch forward? Hope that's right...

Turn your headlights on, then pull the switch out towards you. Hey presto! I'm pretty sure it's covered in the manual.

        Edit: crap I'm slow

Thanks for the fast replies! I can't believe I didn't know that, it seems all so simple now

Not trying to start another war thread, but could you re-educate me me about the laws? Is it illegal to use in QLD?

Oh no, I wasn't blaming you for starting a war thread. But it just so happens that whenever the topic of Fog Lights come up, people use it as a reason to pull out the big guns.. lol

I can't go into the legal technicalities but I know they are illegal.. I'm sure someone else will be able to shed some more light on this issue

That's weird as they come on the car factory standard. I can understand not to use them unless your driving vision is impaired by 'fog' but they sit quite low on the car so I'm assuming it wouldn't distract other car drivers?

Is it illegal to use them full stop? or illegal to use them if there is no need to use them?

I remember the learners booklet saying something like "Only use front fogs when there is low visibility or your main beam impairs your vision to see the road ahead"..

Overseas it is also illegal to use them in the rain due to the reflected glare.

I got pulled over when I was just using them as dayrun lights.... Only in the fog ie Adverse conditions. Why they don't just say fog is beyond me. I also see no reason they can't be used as day run lights so long as the headlights are not on at the same time.

I see people do this all the time, I never knew it was an offense especially in the day time

in NSW it's a $67 offence to use fog / spot lights when the condition's do not warrant them. (ask me how i know this....).

so in nsw, if it's not foggy / poor visibility, you can not legally use them.

                      Jason.

I don't think the Police are too serious about this issue.. Considering I see their Aurion's and HP Commodores with them on all the time...

they do actually issue fines for this offence.

i got fined (more than 10 years ago now) so i learned the hard way.
and as for the cops using them, you should be well aware that it's one rule for them, and another for the rest of us.

That's what camera phone's are for... Bus Jason, you're the first person i've heard who's actually been fined for this.. And it's strange that so many cars are still released with them seeing as their illegal..

they aren't illegal to use if the conditions warrant them.

it's just knobs that use them all the time......
ps, i managed to get my money back on the fine too.
people just need to be aware that if the cop is having a bad day, they can and will fine you for their incorrect use.
