Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I cant fault the GTI...its always been labelled the *all rounder hot hatch*

As for track...how often are you going to do it to need a track spec car.

Obviously for that type of money...you will be getting a EVO IX or STi

I have a 3MPS...not the best car either for the track...but if you know your car well enough...its rather fun and easy to drive on the track.

Good Luck with your future prospects and I hope you find what your happy with.

    Happy Motoring

All you had to do was fit coilovers for $2500, better brake pads for $500 and get a reflash + exhaust $2000.

Still cheaper than what you are going to pay on stamp duty.

How about trying something completely different and taking the $10-20K of extra cash you are going to be tipping in to buy a new car to buy a 2nd, track-only car?

For $20K you could build a superb track car using any number of early 90s cars, and then still have a brilliant every day car in the Golf Gti.

            Just another option...

Yeah see if you can budget $20-$25K and purchase a dedicated track car. I hear the mazda mx-5 se (turbo) models, although no straight line weapon are unparalled on the twisties. They can be considered quite fun also.

Yeah my old Man has one, great fun, not super quick, but great on a track.

                  Nevermind the SE.

I'd get an old NA model with the 1.6 for $7-8K, and spend another $15K on turning into a track warrior.

All you'd need to do is rebuild the engin, throw on a turbo kit, a few minor suspension mods (they are pretty great to begin with) andthen upgrade the brakes.

Would kick the snot out of a stock SE I reckon.

it prob would, but then you got the reliability of a custom built 18 yo engine that was never designed to be turbo'd ... better to get the SE to start off as its a much better base.

Actually the engine that came in the old MX5's was turbocharged in other models.

And with $10K of engine work you could make it ultra-reliable.

And anyway, working on your track car between meets is half the fun

pretty sure the NB turbo SE Model was only fitted with a turbo when it came to our shores, wasnt a factory fitment as such?

Better off getting a dedicated track car (road registered if you don't want to buy a trailer and something to tow it with) than thrashing your daily driver.

Bit hard to have everything as with comfort comes wieght and there are better cars than the Golf for that (not to say Golf's can't be made quicker with the right mods) and there are enough rattles in these cars without getting heaps more from tracking them but each to their own. Still good for the odd track day.

I'd go for a MX-5 2F race car (with lots of head work, roll cage etc) or something similar like a series 6 RX-7, Lotus Elise, Skyline GT-R etc.

Anyway sorry you sold it so soon ericablack36, it was never marketed as a track weapon and you'd lose a packet changing over after 6 months.

yeah it was done by Alan Horsely in Aust.

however from memory, it was just more than strap on a turbo and thats it.

I'm sure they would have upgraded some internals, like they did with the Golf Pirelli over the GTI.

                            danish,

I can see the attraction for some, but personally, i would prefer a turn key car to drive..

I have actually been thinking about this for a while.

Forget an E36 M3, I had 1 and it was a great car but no track car. (I did track mine) It can also be VERY expensive to fix, I had the VANOS head give problems (having it chipped and the rev limiter @ 8000rmin did not help) and it cost a fortune to fix ....

Rather, I'd suggest this for the ultimate track weapon ....

                                2002/2003 Lotus Elise $30-35K
wrecked Polo GTI / MK4 GTI Golf $5-7K
transplant the 1.8T into the Elise and spend $10K on it for more power and handling etc.

All up you could be looking at around $50K and a very unique and potentially a VERY quick track car ...... with a VW heart in it and Lotus suspension engineering

EDIT ... just FYI an stock Elise with half the power of a 350Z Track beats it quite comfortably around a track.
