Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    I just got 25K km on Goodyear EXCELLENCE and they are due for replacement. I always had them balanced and alignments done by Goodyear shop according to their book. This is very poor result as the original NCT5 lasted 45K km. I am after everyday tyres that would last. What would be your advice? Thanks.

    Well the original tyres lasted 45K km. I would go for the same unless I know what tyre will last longer.
    From my experience generally Pirelli tyres are long lasting tyres in all sizes.
    I use Hankook on my van and I like them (replacement for Michelin Pilot Premacy - only lasted 25K km).
    Tell tyre fitter that you want a quiet that will last.

      I stumbled upon a forum a couple of months ago where people were getting up to 90kms out of NCT5.

        I found it;



        A golf IV got 90kms out of them. Perhaps you need to adjust your driving style.

            Actually, I just checked our Golf and... yes we have GY eagle NCT5 as well, so far done 21,000km and they look like new.
            But I have to be honest; there was a small problem with the tyres right from the new. Two from four were oval not circle shape and caused a nasty vibration I could feel in the center of the car and also in the seat. Good Year replaced tyres and all was good.
            They are made in South Africa and I was decided not to buy them again when they wear out but reading the comments in that link above (thanks for posting it), I’ve changed my mind now.

              Goodyear don't list their treadwear ratings on their Australian website but in the USA they are TWR 700 This is a really hard tyre! The NCT5 is TWR 240 which is a fraction soft.

              If you are wearing out TWR700 tyres in 25,000km then my guess is the tyres aren't coping with your driving style & vehicle & they are getting lots of slip. Slip causes tyres to wear.

              Maybe rather than telling the tyre people you want the longest wearing tyre possible, which in their mind means hardest compound available, you should explain how you drive & what mileage you get out of certain tyres. Then they can recommend something appropriate.

              Even going back to NCT5 might not be an option because sometimes OEM tyres are a different spec to what is sold retail.

              If it was me, I'd look at the following:
              Continental ContiProContact
              Michelin Energy XM1+
              Yokohama C-Drive
              Kumho KH15 Solus

              But it could be the tyre & rim package you have just doesn't suit your right foot.
              What about these 16" rims with slightly wider tyres for $400? pretty cheap & the tyres look like they have a little life left in them. Then you can fit a better quality 205/55x16 to the rims.

                An interesting review from the same web site on the Excellence. This suggests that they do not last, but may be more handling orientated.

                  I don't usually push tyres to their limits and perhaps drove less enthusiastically then on the first set. I guess it's cheap asian of african import.

                    I have the same car. The original tyres had the same problems as yours.
                    Not round and only lasted 45k.

                    Its a heavy car up front the TDI.

                    If you put on a soft compound, it'll wear out, simple as that.

                    Currently have on the car Yokohama C-Drives.
                    Quiet, just as grippy and seems to be lasting just as long.

                      One of the things I've noticed with our customers' cars, is the rediculously low tyre pressures people run in them. I don't know what you guys are running them at, but I set them at 36psi. Also, rotating them every 15,000klms does wonders.

                        Good point. I run 34 psi allround the Golf 5 (195/65 X 15) and rotate every 10kms.

                            Mathew, that's what the Continental rep advises, and that's what he puts in all the tyres he services.

                              I think Mav is saying that if you swap your wheels every 10 kms you should leave this week if you are planning to drive to the DOVW in november!!!


                              34 psi is what I set most of my customers Mk5 15in tyres at by the way
