Rear wheel "wurring" noise.

I noticed this morning a "wurring" noise coming from the rear of the vehicle that increases frequency and pitch with the speed of the vehicle. It sounds similar to that of a wheel bearing failure, but I was under the impression that wheel bearings were designed to last the life of the car and didn't require replacing?

It's an 2007 DSG GTI with 63,000km on the clock.


Has anyone experianced a similar issue and what was the outcome?

Yep, I had exactly the same problem from the minute I got my car.
When it went in for service, the told me that that particular wheel had "flat spots" or something from when the ABS kicks in. Therefore it wasn't covered by warranty or anything. While I had the car there I asked them to swap the tyre from the spare wheel to the problem wheel and the sound stopped.

So I guess a good way to test whether it is the tyre would be to swap the spare wheel with the wheel the sound is coming from for a day.

How many km's has you tyres done? If its a few its probably just normal tyre wear.

I found the noise with mine came on pretty suddenly but still had a fair bit of tread left in them. Swapped the wheels with a mate with new tyres to compare and there was no noise.

Rear tyres are pretty low, about 3mm left, so it probably is excessive road noise coming through.

These are still the original Conti's so they haven't done to badly

The fronts are about the same, if not slightly lower. These however are Bridgestones adrenalins that were put on at about 45,000kms. So just short of 20,000kms.

Good to read to current thread about the F1's, looks like an expensive but worthwhile trip to the Goodyear shop.

They're designed to require no maintenance, but that doesn't stop faulty workmanship (rare on one of these btw) or large potholes from causing premature bearing failure.

Rear wheel bearing failure is quite common on the MKV.

Take it to your VW dealer and have it checked out ASAP.

another vote for check your tyres first.

happened to me on my last car and I thought it was bearing wear for sure. took it to the mechanic for new tyres and bearings and mechanic suggested do tyres first. of course he was right
