  • Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics experience?

    G'day people...

After 51,000km the original RE050A's on my R32 need replacing. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics on their Golfs? Wear rates, durability, wet weather performance?

Great tyre, heaps of grip and they perform better than any tyre I've had before. The tyre comes out of top of all the reviews and it's easy to see why.

Ive used them on my FPV GTP and theyre a great tyre, specially in the wet.

Motor magazine actuallty tested them better i the wet than in the dry???

for wear, Ive got around 18,000kms so far and theyre about 60% worn and thats from my tyre-frying RWD

I give them a big tick, and they seem better priced than other big name competitors

I'll probably get these next time round.

It's worth waiting for the 'Buy 3 get 1 free' offer they run from time to time if possible.

in terms of choice the Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza RE001 is an equal alternative in tests (but havent seen anthing on comparitive wear rate.

Ttherefore I'd choose either on the day, depending on price (and perhaps which tread pattern you might prefer the look of?)

Possibly not. The fine print in the 4 for 3 offer said that fitting & balancing was extra whereas usually fitting is included in the price of the tyre.

I know practices change but Goodyear were doing 4 for 3 (inc fitting & balancing) 25 years back when i worked for them & all it meant was we didn't haggle as much - it made no difference to our P&L.

We were always keen to do a deal, especially if it meant stealing a sale from the Bridgestone dealership across the road, so don't be afraid to play one dealership off against another.
Also, we were on monthly, quarterly & annual bonus. In the last few days of the month, my manager would sell tyres at cost+$5 if it meant he would achieve his monthly bonus.
Negotiating in person also helps as we didn't like giving low prices over the phone as often other dealers were ringing us, pretending to be customers so they knew what price to put on their tyres.

                You think?
RE001 is a good tyre but even Bridgestones own RE050A is a slightly better tyre (maybe 5-10% better) than the RE001 (but the RE001 is 2/3 the price).

Tirerack rate the Goodyear Asymmetrics better than the Bridgestone RE050, but they don't even acknowledge the existance of the RE001 - perhaps its only available in Oz?

The RE001 is a higher spec tyre than RE050, but at a much greater cost it would perhaps be hard to justify it?

Perhaps in my earlier comment, Motor actually compare the GYear with the RE001, I honestly cant recall now

RE001 seems to be a Japan, SE Asia, Australia tyre. Not available USA, UK or Europe AFAIK.

RE050A is higher spec & higher price than RE001 Adrenaline. I think the RE001 is a great tyre but it isn't nearly as good as the Goodyear Assymetric (but I'd be happy with RE001 on my car).

                      My quick ring around had the (all 225/45 17) Bridgestone Adrenalins @ $229 a corner, PZero rosso @ $289, Goodyear F1 GSD3 @ $249 and the F1 assymetrics @ $399.

I've got the PZero's at the moment and have been happy. I'm tempted to try the Adrenalins at that price but in my experience the high performance Bridgestones don't last.

I got them fitted and they are awesome (F1's) I took they car for a blast down putty road and they are perfect. Awesome grip off the launch and the cornering is much much better. I have a GTI so I can't really rate them on a R32 but for fwd cars they are a good buy and they aren't noisy either I have done about 8000km and they are about 85-90%. I payed $220 each from memory
Good bye GTI Hello Golf R

Which tyres did you get fitted and what size?

be careful when comparing your brand new tyres with the ones youve just removed, its not a fair comparison

I think you'd still save $400 as when I and a few others were looking for F1's in 225/40/18 which were $517 RRP - the cheapest quote around Brisbane at the time was $485 each, and didn't seem like Goodyear were discounting them much in general.

Anyway good point about the fitting being extra, how much is that about $22?
