Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • HID xenons cutoff question

    Hi guys

for those that have factory Xenons, I was wondering what the cutoff looksl ike when you shine your headlights onto a wall or something?

I know that one side is a fraction lower than the other but which side is lower?

    does it look like this

    passenger <--> driver

    ___ ----

    or

    ----___

Mine look similar to this, ----____ however a bit more scattered (if that makes sense). However my previous Accord Euro was Bang on ----___

driver side should be lower to not dazzle oncoming traffic
passenger side higher to illuminate street signs etc

That's what my mechanic said too BY, so as not to flash the on coming traffic as the roads crossfall usually means the drivers side wheel is a bit higher anyway on a two way residential street.

Some other know it all's said they should be the same but I once wondered the same thing.

They are both in the same plane.
I do some of this in my job
From a distance they both look the same.

I'd like to hear from someone else as well, as there has never been a clear answer (will wait for Maverick to find out).

Not just ADRs, but more an international standard - the passenger side beam height will sit slightly higher than the driver side. Main purpose is to shine a bit of light on pedestrians walking on the side of the road or standing on the kerb.

To answer the OP's question, both answers are right. The first diagram is for LHD markets, the second diagram is for RHD markets.

Something I love about the new Superb, is the ability to change this setting if you drive from, say, the UK into France. Although I don't think we'll ever need that functionality here, lol.

Here is a general link for "laymen". Just swap cutoff to left for RHD cars.

If you happen have an headlight aiming board or a alignment scope in your worksop (required to perform roadworthys and inspections) you do the same for both lights seperately

Perhaps we are talking about the same thing. In the following pic from your link the lights seem the same height but the area on the road looks like the RHS is lower if you look between the two vertical lines..

Wasn't doubting you, just seems like my drivers side light could be slightly higher but would probably start 'getting flashed' by other drivers.

Shouldnt make any difference to other road users. From a distance both lights become one so height is not the issue.
When cars had to old style oval beams without cutoff it was different.
'Z" (VW projectors and zenons) beams and "Y" (Halogen) beams are set in the same plane.

I need to adjust mine, both low and high beam They have been out of whack since day one but never bothered taking it back for adjustment.
I know some one here has posted detailed instructions on how to but I can not find it.
Does anyone know where I can find those instructions.
