08 R32 burning too much oil

new cars will always burn a little but of oil until the bed themselves in.

I still check my oil fortnightly on my TDI and top up as required.

the best advice I could give is top it up with the recommended oil and keep a record of oil usage. If its out of factory specs then go to the dealer and show him the evidence and get it sorted!

Fifth Gear did a story the other night that all but said that most cars are within an inch of seizing up because of low oil pressure. The indicator apparently only comes on when it is too late.
Hard to believe with all the technology in modern engines, the sensors would be so inaccurate but the paranoia levels went through the roof and now I carry a gallon in the car just in case.

I don't know if I'd put a lot of faith in anything fifth gear do, top gear Australia is almost better than that poor excuse for a motoring show.

The oil light on the Golfs and other VW/VAG cars like most if not all other manufacturers comes on when the oil is low but with still sufficient oil in the car to protect it. If people are stupid and keep driving around with it on and/or don't check their oil on a regular basis than they deserve to be walking IMO because they're clearly too stupid to drive a car on the road.

Carrying oil in the boot IMO is pointless, far better to check the oil on a regular basis because if the car starts loosing oil at a rapid rate that gallon won't do anything.

Missus took it up to VW wangara and they kindly topped it up for free. It needed 800ml. Apparently they do go through a bit of oil till they get to around 20'000kms and then start using less, so no big deal. Thanks for advice fullas!

I'd say that your wife is not driving it hard enough for the rings to bed in.

It needs a good thrashing up a steep mountain pass .... put those rings under some pressure

Luck of the draw - my R32 hasn't needed any top ups of oil over 50,000km of driving. I'm guessing the 1L bottle of oil in my boot is starting to go bad now!

The life of the synthetic oil is usually 3 years. You could also ask the dealer to use it in oyur next oil change and give you the fresh 1L, just in case that you need to top up later.
