  • 08 R32 burning too much oil

As the title says my 08 R32 is burning too much oil. It was just serviced 2 months ago and the oil light is on. It's not a faulty sensor as I checked the oil and it's definitely low. Is this a common issue with R32s? What are VW going to do other than top up the oil? It's still under warranty, so I'm assuming any issues with it, will be fixed? It's driven my my wife mostly and unless she's a closet Jenson Button, then I can safely say it's rarely driven hard. Any advice would be appreciated!

How many km have you done since the service?

Also, i've read in the instruction manual that TDI's could need oil up to every 1,00km (I know the R32 isn't diesel, but the manual could shed sime light on the issue )

It's done 4200km since last service. Which was may 6th.

Hmm ok, check out the manual to see what it says regarding oil usage.. If what's happening is contrary to what the manual says, take it back to them.

1l per 1000km is defined as normal by VW, this is in the manual.

And it all comes down to the way you drive it.. 4,200km sounds pretty good if it's being driven like a "normal" car.

A lot of manufacturers say up to 1L per 1000km is acceptable and while that may be so, I would not say it is normal in this day and age.

I suppose the first question is whether the OP checked if the oil level was correct after the service or if it was only checked after the light came on. It might have been short filled after the service.

Without knowing the oil consumption in the past it's hard to give any feedback. Did you check the oil level after the last service? Perhaps it was just a fraction about the level it is now and has triggered the low oil alarm?

How many km's are on the R32? etc etc etc. It's most likely nothing to worry about, get your dealer to top it up and check the oil levels manually yourself on a regular basis so you know what is happening rather than rely on a low oil sensor to tell you to add oil.

They burn a bit more when new, it sounds normal. Service department do free oil top ups, so i'd do that at least once and then keep an eye on it. My light hasn't come on however did an oil change at 7,500.

                    +1
twice I received my car back from service and I needed to top it up.
On one occasion it needed just over 1 lt to bring it to the mark.
Needless to say I never went back.

Just a heads up....ALWAYS check under the hood after a service what ever the car is.
1st thing next morning is good when all oil has run back into sump, coolant has returned etc.

On the R32 mine used a small amount up to about 6000k's but I check weekly so just topped as required.

Seems to be stable now (23000ks)

I'd go as far as to say check all the fluids under the hood on a regular basis and don't wait for warning lights to come on.

We're not Hyundai drivers that are incapable of lifting the bonnet and applying some thought to the maintenance process are we? Last time I looked the bonnet isn't sealed, locked or bolted shut and the manual recommends that we check fluids on a regular basis.

Could not have said it better myself.

I wash my GTI every week or every fortnight. It only takes 5 minutes to check under the bonnet to give yourself some comfort that everything is still in order, including an idea of any oil burn rate.

My oil would have never dropped below 2/3 on the dip stick, and I would have used approximately 2lts in 30,000kms since new (including a 700ml free top up by the dealer at approximately 5,000kms).

I would say that even though it says using up to 1L of oil every 1000km is normal, I would say these days it isn't...Its not like the engine is a old Detroit 6V53...
Anyway, I would say top it up, and check it every week. Preventative maintanance is the best way to keep on top of things, plus it helps you learn about the goings on in your engine.

Fifth Gear did a story the other night that all but said that most cars are within an inch of seizing up because of low oil pressure. The indicator apparently only comes on when it is too late.
Hard to believe with all the technology in modern engines, the sensors would be so inaccurate but the paranoia levels went through the roof and now I carry a gallon in the car just in case.
