There are plenty on this site who have a bow down and worship attitude toward diesels, I just find that a little boring when the alternative is rock solid.
I like the idea of the TSI's.. But from what my VW mechanic mate reckons, they're a time bomb electronically etc.

It's all FUD (usually spouted by a diesel owner's cousins mate - case at hand) until they actually start exploding!
Supercharging and turbocharging is no different to either a single turbo or a single supercharger. It just shoots boost down through the intercooler into the motor.
So the TWIN aspect does not have any impact on engine longevity even when either the turbo or supercharger fails, they just get replaced, Turbo or supercharger failure wont cause an engine to explode. I know, I have blown 2 turbo's and car just drives rest of way home like its N/A (MAP sensor cars).
My dads jag was 10 years old when he traded it and it had a similar EATON sealed charger from the factory. No issues ever in 10 years and it was under load 100% of the time.
The only issue is the block which is probably as strong or stronger than the diesel one as it is newer design and is grey cast iron with lamenar graphite tech etc.
TSI with tune vs TDI with Tune is probably neck and neck except that the TSI has less torque to go with its reduced weight. Which in the end is probably faster as the car already has traction issues. Therefore, lower weight, higher rev range and less torque = WIN 0-100.
subjectively, my TSI just keeps feeling stronger and stronger the longer I own it.
125 TSI = ~60kg lighter, Best turn in of any golf, best off the line performance. Best whooshing/hissing/boosting sounds of any car.
125 TDI = best km range, highest torque of any golf, best passing torque, can handle the load of the diesel owners wife.

And you are entitled to that opinion. However, this case was me talking to him after he had just spent a day "fixing one of those POS TSI's" (his words not mine).

LOL - you'd be right about the fuel!
I remember how the last shape LandBruiser was the first of its class to pass a barrier crash test (big deal!).
Although the occupants would have survived the impact, unhappily the auxiliary fuel tank was ruptured in the collision (the chassis bent like a bastard). Unfortunately this didn't form part of the conclusions of the test and the big fat 4WD became 'safe'.

I think a large part of why I like the TDI is because I like being peverse.
But when my first GT was written off, I test drove another TSI - still preferred the TDI, so I bought another one. The increased torque of the TDI is very noticeable in day to day driving and certainly feels faster - which is what really matters. Whether it is or not, who cares?

Well as Poyta noted, you're not likely to have issues with a diesel until has 500,000km on the clock.
So of course a VW mechanic is going to see the odd TSI through the doors before that mystical number is reached.
The 'highly strung' little things will only reach 300,000km according to another esteemed contributor. (hi)
So we've established that diesels don't have any issues - but if and when they do, mechanics rejoice as they're thrilled to be working on them.
Just like the POS V8, the POS V6, the POS whatever-I'm-paid-to-be-working-on-today.

Bottom line they are very similar cars on paper, the major differences are in how that power is delivered. Both are amazingly fuel efficient for what they can do.
The 1.4TSI felt EXACTLY like driving my Mum's new 2.4 Honda Euro. Revvy, linear power from idle, quite a smooth broad powerband as you expect a modern big 4 banger to be. The twin charging makes it feel about a litre bigger in my opinion.
The diesel version is like a 125 two stroke MX bike....nuthin, nuthin, nuthin, JESUS, change gears. It's like a light switch, and isn't a smooth car, one of the tests referred to it as "feral" and that sounds about right.
If you want to drive your mum around in style, she'll appreciate the smooth 1.4 TSI. I know Polar's Mum doesn't appreciate riding in my brawny oiler. If you love swapping gears and like a real on/off power delivery, like me, well the tractor is going to be your poison.
Biggest downside is they just don't sound sexy through the carpark.. "G'day luv, check me out, clakkytyclakcclakclack...."

...apart from the EGR motor failure and "throttle" gumming up from the EGR / oil vapour issue, the $5k DPF getting full about the same time from the oil vapour ash, and the highly stressed PD cam wearing through the case hardening well before the magic half mill, and I wonder how long these massive pressure injector pumps will last.
I love my oiler, but don't kid yourself it's going to be incident free beyond 200k same as the TSI, or GTI for that matter, unless you start preparing for things ahead of time.

Agreed, I seem to recall some issues with 103kw turbos? (I could be wrong though).
I also don't believe VW would release a version (in the MkV) then build on that by releasing it in the Mk6 that they weren't 100% confident in!
