  • Colour coded bumper, skirts for GTI

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and have just clocked up 5000Km in my DSG GTI (black with leather). I love the car although I would like to get the plastic bumpers , skirts and front splitter colour coded.

Any recommendations on who to see? I have called VW and they reckon they can refer me onto someone, but I'm worried I may not get the best deal...

Any help would be most appr.

    Cheers

I wouldn't be going through VW if I were you, they will send you somewhere where they will get a comission from, meaning you will pay through the nose.

Any decent painter will be able to match the colour and give you a good price. Chances are you will get it done quicker as well.

Thanks, that was my feeling too. Just a bit precious about the car as it's pretty new and I don't want it done badly.

Personally I wouldn't bother if your car is black as the difference wont be that much and those matt black textured parts actually take quite a beating from stone chips. Once you get that painted gloss black you will see every little scratch and chip that gets on them and it will look terible. There's a product out there I think made by Meguires called Plastic blackener or something like that which makes all your black plastic sections shiny and deep black. I just use that on mine and it looks good on a black car. I would probably paint them if I had a non-black car but otherwise I would leave it alone.

Dont worry bout the stone chips thats bs.. Ive had my candy white coded for over 12 months now its even sadly had its share of dirt roads and i havnt got any chips only on my bonnet and upper bumper. Just dont try to cheap your way out of it. Find a reputable painter ask him to smooth the textured bits and yeah dont haggle pay what he asks, that way i guess if your not happy he might be more obliged to fix it for you. It may be a little more subtle on a bmp but still definitely noticeable and worth it.

Thanks to all - I have found a guy who will do it - just need to get a quote and get it done. I'm not bothered about the stone chips as I can always get it repainted anyway. I just find it annoying that the GTI'd don't have this as standard, seems a bit cheap considering the amount you spend on a new one, compared to say a mazda, which has colour coding (before anyone starts, I'm not comparing a Golf to a mazda, only in terms of what extras you get for your cash).

Oh, the other annoying thing about the plastic unpainted bumpers is when you wax your car, if you are not very careful the white residue kind of gets stuck in the textured plasic bits, and it's quite hard to get out!

If your guy doesn't work out. I've got a guy on the northern beaches I'd definitely recommend.

I'll be doing this once I get my GLI skirts/valance...

My beater is using my old damaged valance for experimentation though, so if anything cocks up or it can't be done, he won't be doing it

This may be a stupid question but where did you source your GLI bits?

They have a complete conversion kit that includes front lip, skirts and rear bumper extension. But save yourself $155 and skip the front lip - it's identical to the one we have on there now.

I was going to do it to mine but I observed the chipping on the plastic from road debris and thought otherwise.

Gravel roads aren't a problem with the conti CS2's - the tread just doesn't seem to pick up any stones at all.

I'd probably still do it if I wasn't doing as much highway driving as I now seem to do.

Remember that you'll see alot more scratches and marks on a black kit as opposed to a white one..
