  • OEM IPOD kit = no charging?

So my car got broken into.. see other thread. And the insurance guys replaced my Ipod kit, from Connect2 to the OEM Vw version.

Things I have noticed - you can't change tracks on the Ipod whilst it is plugged in, like you can with the Connect2 kit. Which is slightly annoying

BUT worst of all NO charging of the Ipod. I have the latest 4th gen Ipod Nano.. And it says on the screen.. "charging not supported with this device".

But when I plug my girlfriends older ipod in... it charges. Anyone else had this problem with their Ipod? Is it normal?

I drove out to Orange over the weekend and half way back the music stopped... and god forbid I had to listen to local radio!!!

its to do with the new ipods. buy a old one and be done with it.

if it was working before with the SAME ipod go back to your insurance, and explain the situation. you have the right to have things performing as they were prior to the repair.

hmmm... the ipod got stolen, and they cut the lead. Hence the issue.

So do you think that even if I did have the old kit it would still be an issue? eg the problem is the 4th gen Ipods?

Theres a few ways to get around this

The nano like the iphone requires a reference voltage to be on pins 2 and 3 of the usb connector, this can be above 1.225 volts. The use of a few resisters will allow the iphone to be charged with a usb car charger and the iphone charging cable. The real apple usb charger supplies 2.8v and 2.0v on pins 2 and 3.

Basically you can mod the existing adapter by working out where the usb pins 2 and 3 connect to on the plug that connects into the ipod/iphone. There didn't use to be any standard for charging devices via USB but there is now http://www.usb.org/developers/devcla...arging_1_0.zip

OR you can purchase adapters that do this for you

2nd Gen Touch does not charge

... yep, the 2nd Generation Touch does not charge with the factory Ipod adaptor.
I though that was crap but, after updating the Touch with the new software last week, all the (limited) functionality that did exist has now gone. Instead of playing all tracks random or the first three playlists, I can now play anything on the ipod but without control from the head unit (i.e. change tracks, albums, etc directly with the Touch). So, now the Ipod adaptor offers only the same functionality as the original aux-input in the centre console!!!

I just find it bizzare that what is a very simple piece of kit is so expensive considering how long the last gen of iPhone and iPods have been around. Where is the cheap china knock off

I keep thinking about getting one, but then rarely use the iPhone in the car, that's why I have an iPod

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I have the same problem. I just assumed in all my noobness that they didn't charge any ipod ever. I have an iTrip that I carry around with me to charge it when it runs out of juice through the adapter. PITA indeed. I'll be getting a charge converter asap. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know of any retailers over here that stock these converters?

Thanks, yeah I found one of those on eBay with really cheap shipping, I'll probably end up getting it since no-one seems to stock them over here.

I plugged my new iPhone into the iPod adapter and it worked (except charging). Then a few days later it came up with a message "no CDX" or something similar and not even my old iPod is detected by the adapter now. Anyone had this, and have a solution?

I just bought one of these...

works great in portrait and landscape modes and only $10

A colleague of mine bought the app last week and i had a play with it yesterday, it does look very polished and easy to use, just like the original tom tom interface. ill wait and see what updates come oout in the next month or 2 before i buy it as i think it still has a small way to go to be complete with the lack of speed cameras and online integration features non existent.
