Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

So new oil & filter + fuel filter + air filter & the car should feel like a new one.

Is yours DSG? I think that is supposed to have a fluid change at 60k too
    Yes, mine is DSG.

      That won't be a cheap service - probably $1000+.
It might pay you to get a few quotes. Maybe even get some prices from the independant specialists?

Yes it probably won't be cheap, but being under VW warranty if it gets services by other than a dealer, won't it void the warranty?

I can post you a photo of an even lower figure if you like - it all depends on what distance you travelled to get that figure. I have steep hill as soon as I leave my house so I can get an average of about 2l/100km when I reach the bottom of the hill because I'll be travelling for about 2kms buring 0l/100km. Then if I start driving again it soon goes up again.

If I try really hard and keep the revs very low I can get my average fuel consumption down to around 5.4l/100km around the city with lots of stop start traffic which I think is pretty good but this just cloggs the damn particulate filter and in order to keep it clean I need to keep my revs now higher and use a lower gear so I now average 6.5l/100km. It s%&ts me that I need to do this- Can't wait to get rid of that damn particulate filter, then I'd image that I could get my fuel consumption even lower than 5.4 not only because I could keep the revs lower but also because I'm pretty sure the filter is restrictive.

Nope, as long as the servicing is carried out as per the logbook/service manual and is carried out by suitably qualified personnel using genuine VW parts the warranty is still valid. This is written in law.

Any of the good independents will be aware of this and can conform to these requirements.

Off the top of my head, there's nowhere in our area (St.George) but there's VW Village at Kensington and Eurosomething near Chatswood. I'd almost guarantee there's somebody closer to the North Shore.

Yes I checked it out, VW in Sutherland quoted me $1200-$1400 for a 60k service , Classic Cars in Chatswood quoted me $900 and HG Motors at Lane Cove quoted me $700.

I am tossing up between HG & Classic Cars, Classic Cars are up the road from my work, which I am happy with. We will see what happens.

im lucky, mine does not have the particulate filter... (as far as im aware, none of the 1.9's do).....

as for where i was when the pic was taken, it was on the princess hwy, at albion park, after a run from sydney, hence the 180 odd km showing on the trip meter. the fuel consumption ended up at being about 4.6 by the time i got to my mums place, another 100 km away.

Seeing as the DSG has to be serviced and his car is under warranty I wouldn't be getting that done anywhere but a VW dealership, the changing of the fluid isn't straightforward and if something on the DSG like the mechatronics or even the gearbox itself needs replacing and VW say the fluid/filter were not changed correctly it could be a $4K+ bill.

Not worth the risk IMO even if just the DSG is serviced at the dealer and the rest is done elsewhere that would avoid any risk.

The DSG fluid and filter change takes around 2-3 hours and is around $4-500.

Admitting I know nothing about the DSG I'll ask the question anyway. Wouldn't the DSG be able to be serviced by any good Automatic transmission specialist workshop? $4-500 sounds a little excessive for a few hours labor, some fluid and a filter if that's what dealers charge.

Back on topic....my 2.0 TDI displays an average of 5.2l most of the time.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

No, theres a specific process that needs to be followed + you need special tools & VCDS & the oil DSG specific & expensive. It's not as difficult (from a technical/process point of view it looks quite simple) as Maverick makes it out but I can see his point about keeping things "within the family".
It's a shame really as the independants generally have an overall higher level of skill & care whereas the dealerships will have a couple of good VW techs, a couple of good techs that are learning VW, and a huge variation of experience & skill under that - some that you wouldn't trust with a tricycle.
The Skoda/VW dealer near me - all of them were Holden/Mitsubishi/Hyundai mechs 12 months ago.

on a recent trip to my parents place, just after 160km on the highway, i looked at the MFD.
couldn't help but take a snap shot (i was stopped at a light at the time)

the more i drive this car, the more i like it.

Ours has 11,000Kms on it and I can't get under 6.2 on an Interstae trip.

That really annoys me when my friend Keith gets 5.4 L/100kms from Bris to Bendigo with 2,000kms on the clock in a Passat CC.

Looks like I may do better later

i would say it probably gets better with a little age.....

also, it greatly depends on your driving style.
an example, a mate and i went on a road trip many years ago.

the difference between him and me was over 50km per tank.
that was in a 97 VT V6 auto.

so driving style plays a big part in economy figures.
i cant wait to see how low i can get it to go on my trip to Brisbane....

a trip on the M4 today after refueling and resetting the meter.
and i was happy with the previous 4.4 L/100 !

Kind of the opposite but impressive in the same vein, here is maca's MFD just outside of Rathdowney after our little trip down Lyons Road across into Mexico and then back up around the "main" bendy way again.
