Hows this for fuel economy ?

on a recent trip to my parents place, just after 160km on the highway, i looked at the MFD.
couldn't help but take a snap shot (i was stopped at a light at the time)

the more i drive this car, the more i like it.

Are you sure you haven't got a faulty display that doesn't show the "1" before the "4" ??

In that case, you will get close on 1200Km per tank !! Wowsers !!

the displayed economy seems fairly accurate so far...
i have only had the car for about 8 weeks and only done about 1500 km.

i have seen the displayed economy regularly at 4.7 on the highway, and usually at about 5.2 round town., but that 4.4 really stood out....
time will tell, as im off on a 2000km round trip soon......

That's awesome economy!! I got 4.7 on the way up to Coolum once, and 4.6 down. I blame that on the shape of the world.

        Gotta love Diesels!!

For the record the MFD is notoriously inaccurate, but not by that much. Still, compared to every other VW with an inaccurate MFD, it's awesome.

What blows me away about the oilers is you FLOG it senseless, and you still get amazing economy.

I don't! If I'm up it for the rent around town I'll be lucky to get 600 Km to a tank.

Should get about 950 on this tank though. lots of highway driving - ocassionally very fast highway driving

Best record i got was 6.8l on highway driving (princess highway) T__T

If you work on your driving technique you will easily outdo 4.4 especially in a 1.9 TDI

My last return trip from Sydney to home approx 130km, I averaged 90km/h and fuel consumption on MFD was 3.9 L/100.

Have been trying to crack the 4.0 mark for sometime and have put it down to the motor starting to finally run in after 20,000km

                      I have a petrol manual.
This past week I've been deliberately driving with a light foot to see if I can keep it in FSI mode. Generally on the motorway I'm averaging 5.5L/100 after 40km. Another 10km of suburban streets pushes it back to 6.2l/100km. The reading is ~0.3 optimistic.

yeah I noticed your K's and still think you will do better in time.
                        Get to know your vehicle.
Of course a lot depends on the gradient of your traveling.
                        I usually get around the 4.1-4.4 on the Sydney/Newcastle Fwy, @ 100km/h
To achieve my latest figure 3.9 I slowed to 90km/h easily done late at night
which is most of my driving.

I have noticed my fuel consumption on the MFD is very accurate to my manual figures.
My overall fuel consumption for almost 20000k's is 4.6L/100
95% of my driving is Fwy
Also try not to stop at lights, cruise up to them slowly and move off as they change.

I notice my 07 TDI Jetta's Fuel Economy has gone down hill, I get 7.5L/100km's driving from Rockdale to North Sydney weekdays in peak hour, It is up for the 60k service soon, should I be expecting better economy once I get my service done?

most of my trips so far (apart from to work and back) have been
From Sydney to nowra and back.
My parents live down there, and I visit as often as time permits.

I'm about to go on a trip to brisvegas and back in about 5 weeks.
Looking forward to seeing how the car goes. It will be about 2000km round trip.

I think you'll find the Air Filter (probably the fuel filter too) isn't changed until the 60,000km service. It's probably dirty, badly clogged & overdue for replacement. 60k seems an awfully long time to run a small filter for (they are only about 200mm X 400mm aren't they?).

So new oil & filter + fuel filter + air filter & the car should feel like a new one.

Is yours DSG? I think that is supposed to have a fluid change at 60k too
