I'm running Bridgestone RE001 on the front, and original CS2 on the back, the RE001 is a big improvement on the CS2 on the dry, but not as great on the wet. The front is more stable than the back now, will buy again

        I was referring to 225/45R17 & 215/40R17.

one of my cars uses 225/45R17, the other 215/40R17.

you are correct, the 225/45R17 is not that common, however is cheaper and more popular than the 215/40R17.

Uncommon tyre sizes suck, as they cost more due to lack of demand.

I'd probably agree on that, but the RE001's on mine are a lot more progressive in letting go IMO. So you know your getting to the limit before you go over.

When you say progressive you mean, dont last long, or grip is somewhat limited in regards to a performance tyre..?

progressive in you know when the tyre runs out of grip so you know the limits of the tyre before you actually lose control.

some tyres feel like they are in total control and have heaps of grip in reserve when they are at 9/10ths. push just a little harder and they will snap or understeer you off the road.

Hope this works. I scanned a PDF from the EVo Tyre test 2007 in which they use a GTi running on stock 17s to compare various tyres.

                  Download it here: http://www.box.net/shared/m31qmi0p3r

Interesting to note in the article the difference between some of the tyres in the wet. Also the fact that running the Bridgestone RE050s on both 17 and 18 inch RIMs and the result that the 17s gave better feel and better performance, 2.5s a lap fast on what is essential a 60 second course, that's a 4% performance downgrade if you upgraded to the factory 18s!! Obviously there are newer tyres out on the market now that may perform better.

The Michelin Pilot Sports were a big disspointment for me. So for my GTi I'll be looking at either Goodyear, Continentals or Bridgestones when I next need a set.

                  Cheers,
                  Nabes

Any Astra H running 18"s also uses that size so stock, the Astra H SRi-T runs 225/40/18
Hankooks S1 Evo k107's are a good tyre for the price too, not amazing in the wet, but solid cornering performance and good treadwear for the performance, or you can try their new tyre, the v12? evo
