IMO the Pirelli P6 and P7 are pretty good at most things. Shame they stopped making the P6000...

It might be worthwhile buying a set of rims and tyres in 16", you can pick up new sets that people have upgraded pretty cheap and often less then the price of 4 brand new tyres. You get a better choice of tyres in that size include CSC2/3's (which are often then OEM fitment).

To give you an idea of price I sold 17" GTI wheels with 50% tread on the front and 90% on the rear for ~$1000 and a brand new set for ~$1500. I've seen new sets of 16" wheels for under $1000 depending on the style. Check out ebay (watch out for replicas) and the forsale sections on the vw forums.

I have an article in EVO where they did their tyre test with a GTi about a year ago. I'll try and dig it up for you all. I think the goodyears came out on top.

Have you considered Falken 912? Have read some good reports.

The Pirelli "P Zero" is their latest tyre. The P Zero and Eagle F1A were launched during 2007.

Whereas the P Zero Nero, Rosso and System are decent tyres but they've been around for least seven years. Tyre technology is always advancing so best to aim for the newer models.

As for 195/65 R15, the Bridgestone Turanza ER300, Continental PremiumContact 2 or Pirelli P6 & P7 are some safe choices, they more often than not do well in German tyre tests. Don't get the Pirelli P6000 because they are now obsolete.

Just got quoted $419 per Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy from Beaurepairs. Including fitting, etc. It seems a bit much, or is that me being cheap...

I recall someone was quoted around $375/tyre over at GolfMkV.com forums. Occasionally, Goodyear have a "buy three, get one free" promotion, don't know if you can wait it out though.

Wheels found the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric best for larger tyres, followed closely (and much more cheaply) by the Falken FK 452:

                      that seems excessive!!!.

I haven't priced one up for 225/45R17s, however I recently fitted 2 Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy (German Made) 215/40R17s to my astra turbo for............. $180 each fitted & balance.

bargain price, new stock from a Dunlop/Goodyear dealer, but it was a super deal.

From what I've seen the 215/40r17 is slightly more expensive than the 225/45r17, amongst overall brands.

previously I fitted 2 Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza re001 (japanese made) for $250 each 215/40R17.

performance wise, overall they are very similar, however I would rate the re001 slightly (and I do mean slightly) over the Eagle F1 in the dry, and vice versa in the wet.

both very good tyres that don't cost the earth. they perform well, aren't too noisy and wear fairly well. For me, I couldn't justify getting more expensive or cheaper tyres.

When the GTI needs replacing tyres, I will have no hesitations in getting the re001 or Eagle f1 again. what I get will depend if I can find one cheaper than the other at the time. For $180 vs $250, the f1 was the choice for me.

So I suggest you strongly consider the Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza re001 - $249 at Bridgestone.. great tyre and at a great price.

I went through the same thing some months ago, and as I had only good experiences with Hankook on my Multivan, I went Hankook on 17" rims, and I have been really happy with the results. The 17's have firmed up the ride somewhat, but are much quieter than the original michelins, and were about $150 per corner. A bargain.

It's the other way around you'll find, the 225/40/18 and 225/45/17 are not common tyres. The 225/40/18 only has two cars listed next to it when the tyre shops look up the size and that's the Golf GTI/R32 and the Civic Type R.

Often going to a 235 can save you $200.

The 225/40/18 in a F1 costs between $420 and $510 depending on the 4 for 3 sale and the 225/45/17 is only around $50-100 cheaper.

Nero and Rosso tyres are kind of confusing, the Rossos are more expensive than the Neros, however the Neros perform better.

Bridgestone Adrenalin's won the most 2008 Motor magazine tyre test which included the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics and Pirelli P-Zero Neros. For the record though all did very well. I don't think you'd be really disappointed in any of them.

Ringing around a few months ago it also seemed that the Adrenalin's are the cheapest of those three (for my 18s anyway). Still not "cheap" though but can you really put a price on the only thing that connects your car to the road?

                              Cheers,

I'm on Goodyear Excellence for 25K km, but not sure if they would last another 10K. I'm happy with them (<$170). The original NCT5 were sort of OK for daily run, but lasted 45K km !
